About Hollow Knight: Silksong
Hollow Knight: Silksong is the breathtaking sequel to Team Cherry's landmark Metroidvania, elevating the genre with a new protagonist, a haunting kingdom to explore, and a refined, high-speed playstyle. Players take on the role of Hornet, princess-protector of Hallownest, who finds herself kidnapped and cast into the vast, gothic realm of Pharloom. This highly-anticipated follow-up builds upon the critically acclaimed foundation of its predecessor with stunning hand-drawn artistry, a soaring orchestral score, and a deep, mature narrative that expands the beloved universe.
Gameplay shifts to emphasize acrobatic movement and precise, tool-based combat. Hornet is far more agile than the Knight, capable of sprinting, wall jumps, and using her Needle as a grappling hook. A new resource, Silk, fuels her special abilities and is managed via a Spool, used for everything from healing to deploying a wide array of combat and utility Tools. The Soulslike-inspired death mechanic returns, with players losing their primary currency, Rosaries, unless they are protected, creating tense expeditions into the interconnected biomes. Progression is driven by finding Mask Shards to increase health, Crests to expand Silk capacity, and upgrading gear with the blacksmith Forge-Daughter.
The new kingdom of Pharloom is a character in itself, featuring diverse, painterly regions like the lush Moss Grotto, the industrial Deep Docks, and the opulent, white-and-gold Citadel. Beyond the expansive main campaign, the game offers substantial replayability through the brutal Silk Soul Mode, a permadeath-inspired challenge unlocked after completion. With over 150 new enemies and formidable bosses like the sentinel Lace, whose role evolves throughout the story, the world is dense with peril and discovery.
Fans of intricate world-building, challenging yet fair exploration, and fluid, skill-based combat will find Hollow Knight: Silksong to be a masterful evolution of the formula. It stands as a definitive Metroidvania experience, promising to captivate both returning veterans and newcomers with its beautiful, melancholic world and deeply satisfying mechanical depth.
Review Verdict
A monumental, high-speed masterpiece that rewards mastery with breathtaking art and deep systems. While its punitive runbacks and opaque endgame requirements can frustrate, it is a triumph of the genre.
