Path of Exile 2 Nvidia Driver Bug Fixed After 18 Months

Grinding Gear Games and Nvidia have resolved an intermittent DirectX 12 GPU crash affecting Path of Exile 2 players on Nvidia hardware after roughly 18 months of investigation. The fix arrived through Nvidia’s official GeForce Game Ready Driver 610.88 release, which addresses long pauses that occurred during extended gameplay sessions.

Nvidia’s official 610.88 release notes specifically state: “Path of Exile 2: Fixed intermittent long pauses that could occur after extended gameplay sessions in DX12 mode.” The issue affected Nvidia GPU users running the game in DX12 mode; the announcement does not indicate that non-Nvidia graphics hardware was affected.

The resolution matters because the bug could interrupt extended Path of Exile 2 sessions with recurring freezes. The driver release marks the end of a lengthy collaboration between GGG and Nvidia and gives affected players an official driver-level fix rather than relying solely on in-game workarounds.

How GGG Reproduced the Intermittent GPU Crash

Grinding Gear Games spent approximately 1.5 years isolating Path of Exile 2’s intermittent GPU crash, according to game director Jonathan Rogers in a developer video. The issue was difficult to reproduce consistently, and Rogers said Nvidia needed reliable steps before it could investigate the problem fully.

GGG’s initial testing involved playing the game for extended periods, which Rogers described as effectively “taking shots in the dark.” The engine team later built a replay system that could reproduce long gameplay sessions while recording additional engine data. That replay triggered the crash every five to seven minutes on average, compared with the much less predictable player reports.

To give Nvidia an identical test environment, GGG sent the company the complete PC setup used for the reproduction, including the computer, monitor, mouse and keyboard. This allowed Nvidia to run the replay on matching hardware and examine the failure directly.

Nvidia’s Game Ready Driver 610.88 later listed the official fix as: “Path of Exile 2: Fixed intermittent long pauses that could occur after extended gameplay sessions in DX12 mode.” Exact locations, prerequisites, rewards and missable warnings are not applicable to this technical investigation.

What Nvidia Changed in Driver 610.88

Nvidia fixed the Path of Exile 2 issue by increasing the shader heap size in its driver. According to Grinding Gear Games game director Jonathan Rogers, Nvidia identified that change after GGG provided a reliable reproduction of the crash and the hardware used to trigger it.

The fix arrived in Nvidia Game Ready Driver 610.88. Nvidia’s release notes describe the change as: “Path of Exile 2: Fixed intermittent long pauses that could occur after extended gameplay sessions in DX12 mode.”

This was a driver-level correction, separate from GGG’s engine-side work. GGG’s systems helped detect the GPU crash and recover by reloading textures, shaders, and the game engine without fully shutting down; Nvidia’s shader-heap adjustment addressed the underlying driver issue for affected Nvidia hardware.

Player Impact and Path of Exile 2 Launch Context

For affected Nvidia users, the bug caused roughly 30-second freezes that repeatedly interrupted extended Path of Exile 2 sessions. According to the report, the pauses could recur about every 20 minutes, creating particular problems during long play sessions and high-level content.

Some players used a workaround that reduced the game's visual quality to lessen the interruptions. The fix in Nvidia's Game Ready Driver 610.88 addresses the reported DX12 issue, meaning affected players should no longer face the same recurring pauses once the driver-level solution is applied.

The resolution comes as Path of Exile 2 moves toward its full 1.0 release. The report describes that launch as expected later this year, but Grinding Gear Games has not officially confirmed that timing in the available information. For players, the fix removes a long-running source of disruption ahead of the game's next major development milestone.
