Rockstar Games Announces Free GTA 5 PS5 Upgrade for PS4 Players
Rockstar Games has announced that owners of Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 4 can upgrade to a PlayStation 5 version for free, beginning June 18, 2026. According to an official guide, the free upgrade path is available to all PS4 owners, whether they purchased a digital or physical copy of the game.
The company is offering this complimentary upgrade as a final incentive to move its sizable PlayStation 4 player base to newer hardware. A recent leak indicated that GTA Online still maintains nearly two million active players on PS4.
Rockstar Games stated the PS5 version will deliver "vast technical improvements" and allow for seamless migration of both Story Mode and Online progress. The upgrade also introduces new features exclusive to the enhanced version, including Hao's Special Works and Career Progress rewards.
How to Claim the Upgrade and Migrate Your Progress
The free PS5 upgrade for Grand Theft Auto V requires different steps for digital and physical copy owners, with progress migration available for both Story Mode and GTA Online.
According to Rockstar Games' published guide, the upgrade process begins on June 18th, 2026. Players who own the digital PS4 version can navigate to the game's hub on their PS5 console and select the option to download the PS5 version at no cost.

For owners of a physical PS4 copy, the process requires the PS4 Blu-ray disc. Players must insert the disc into their PS5 to install the game, then access the game hub to download the PS5 version. A critical requirement for physical copy owners is that the PS4 Blu-ray disc must be inserted every time they wish to play the PS5 version.
Progress migration is a key component of the upgrade. Both single-player Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression can be transferred from PS4 to PS5. Rockstar has stated the migration process will be seamless, though the guide references a separate resource for the specific steps to transfer PS4 save data.
New Features: Hao’s Special Works and Career Rewards
The free PS5 upgrade for Grand Theft Auto V includes exclusive new features, primarily the Hao's Special Works performance shop and a Career Progress rewards system.
According to Rockstar Games, Hao's Special Works is a new high-performance vehicle upgrade shop exclusive to the PlayStation 5 version. This facility allows players to modify select vehicles with unique performance enhancements and visual customizations designed to take advantage of the console's increased power.

Technical improvements
The upgrade also introduces Career Progress rewards, a system that provides veteran players with new unlocks and bonuses based on their existing accomplishments in both Story Mode and GTA Online. This initiative, detailed in the official upgrade guide, is intended to reward long-term players for their progress as they migrate to the new console version.
These new features are part of what Rockstar Games describes as the "vast technical improvements" included in the native PS5 version, aiming to enhance the experience for players making the transition from the PS4. The additions are separate from the upcoming "Kortz Center Heist" update for GTA Online, which is scheduled for release in July 2026.
The Kortz Center Heist and Art Studio Expansion
The upcoming July update for GTA Online will introduce "The Kortz Center Heist," a new multi-stage operation set in the prestigious gallery located in Pacific Bluffs. According to Rockstar Games' announcement, players will be tasked with raiding the world-famous Kortz Center, a gallery housing priceless international works of art, for personal gain.
To facilitate the heist, a new Art Studio property will become available for players to purchase and add to their Mansion property. This studio will serve as the planning hub for the operation, where players can scope out the Kortz Center complex and prepare for the infiltration and escape. The Art Studio is described as a new business venture that integrates into a player's criminal empire, following the recent "Mansion update."

The heist's target, the Kortz Center, is situated on the hills of Pacific Bluffs in Los Santos. This location adds a new high-profile landmark to the game's map for criminal enterprise. The update represents Rockstar Games' continued expansion of end-game content for GTA Online, introducing a fresh property type and a new large-scale mission for players to undertake with their crews.
