Sega Announces Massive Sonic the Hedgehog 35th Anniversary Lineup
Sega has unveiled a major wave of announcements for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise's 35th anniversary, headlined by a new indie collaboration, a surprise Switch 2 release, and upcoming game collections. The announcements were made during a special 35th-anniversary livestream on Tuesday, as reported by VGC, and are aimed at celebrating the iconic character's legacy with both new and classic content.
The first new project is Sonic Pico Park, a cooperative puzzle-platformer developed in collaboration with indie studio Pico Park. The game was officially announced during Summer Game Fest, according to an interview with Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka and Pico Park designer Shunsuke Miyake. The title adapts the chaotic, communication-heavy multiplayer gameplay of the original Pico Park into the Sonic universe.

Furthermore, the company announced two comprehensive physical collections for the Nintendo Switch. The Classic Sonic Collection and Modern Sonic Collection are both scheduled for release in October 2026 at a price of $49.99 USD each. The Classic bundle will include Sonic Origins, Sonic Mania, and Sonic Superstars, while the Modern collection packages Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Colors: Ultimate, and Sonic Forces.

Sega is celebrating the franchise's 35th anniversary with a suite of high-end retro releases and new physical game bundles for the Nintendo Switch. The offerings include limited-edition Genesis cartridges and two multi-game collections, all launching this year.
For dedicated collectors, Sega has partnered with iam8bit to produce premium $100 "Legacy Cartridge" editions of the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. According to the announcement, the first game will feature a translucent blue cartridge shell, while the sequel will be housed in an orange shell. Sonic Team Strategy: Indie Collaborations and the Influence of Mania
Sonic Team has formalized a new strategy of partnering with independent developers, a direct result of the critical and commercial success of 2017's Sonic Mania. This approach was highlighted at Summer Game Fest with the announcement of Sonic Pico Park, a cooperative puzzle-platformer developed in collaboration with Pico Park creator Shunsuke Miyake. According to VGC, Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka stated this indie-focused direction offers "freshness" and a way to innovate without the scale and pressure of internal Sega projects.
The pivot was inspired by Sonic Team's experience working with indie developers Christian Whitehead and Headcannon on Sonic Mania, which sits as the joint-highest rated Sonic game on Metacritic. "With Sonic Mania, we got a new perspective on game development," Iizuka told VGC. He described observing the "passion" and unique focus of indie teams, a quality he also recognized in Miyake's team. This led to the surprising proposal for a full-game collaboration on Sonic Pico Park, rather than simpler skin or merchandise deals.

Iconic level design
Integrating the Sonic IP into Miyake's communication-heavy, co-op puzzle formula required adapting iconic elements. Miyake explained to VGC that they incorporated "Sonicness" by weaving signature actions like the Spin Dash into the gameplay. He gave an example: "Tails does a Spin Dash and then Sonic falls because of it," capturing the chaotic, cooperative fun central to the Pico Park experience. Iizuka contrasted this project's goal—"fun multiplayer" where "failure is fun"—with Sonic Mania's appeal to core fans and Sonic Superstars' family-friendly design.
Iizuka's reflection on the arduous, precedent-setting development of Sonic Adventure (1998) informs this open strategy. He described that period to VGC as a challenging reinvention without a roadmap, creating a legacy of experimentation across genres. Now, facing rising development costs and complexity, Iizuka sees indie collaborations as a viable path for continued experimentation. "They can bring that freshness... without the pressure of 'we have to make this huge game with so many resources,'" he said, allowing for agile development on strong core ideas that might not originate from within Sega.
While Sonic Pico Park and a second year of content for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds are key 35th-anniversary announcements, Iizuka teased to VGC that more unannounced plans are in the works, indicating this indie collaboration model may define future Sonic projects.
Future Outlook: Sales Milestones and Upcoming Anniversary Content
The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise enters its 35th anniversary year from a position of commercial strength, buoyed by the breakout success of its latest mainline entry. According to sales data released by Sega, Sonic Frontiers has sold just shy of 5 million units, with a running total of 4.94 million copies. This positions the 2022 open-zone adventure as the second-best-selling title in the recent Sega portfolio analyzed, solidifying its formula as a key pillar for the franchise's future.
Ongoing live-service titles are also receiving support, with a second year of content planned for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. This commitment to post-launch support follows the game's initial release and indicates Sega's strategy to maintain player engagement across its ecosystem. The anniversary celebration extends beyond interactive media, with Sega announcing a "Sonic Live" concert series and a brand-new narrative podcast as part of the broader 35th-anniversary festivities.

Looking ahead, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has teased that more unannounced plans for the 35th anniversary are still to come. In an interview with VGC, Iizuka stated, "We are not done with Sonic," emphasizing the team's goal of ensuring fans enjoy content throughout the entire anniversary year. He encouraged the community to "stay tuned" for future announcements, hinting at the potential for further collaborations and projects yet to be revealed. This forward-looking statement, combined with the strong sales performance of modern titles, signals a confident and active roadmap for the Blue Blur.
