If a Howling Cavern looks like a larger Frost Cave, it is easy to prepare for the wrong fight. Geirrhafa turns the Mountain rulebook inside out: Frost does nothing to him, Fire deals increased damage, and his ice attacks punish anyone who relies on a shield alone. His 3700 health makes the damage choice matter, but the arena is decided by where you stand.
This guide is for the player who wants Hildir's Silver Chest without burning through a corpse run. It covers the encounter and the return trip to Hildir, not every room in Hildir's Request or every possible weapon build.
Bring Fire and Frost Protection
Bring a fire damage option. A Staff of Embers is the strongest shortcut, Fire arrows give you a ranged option, and normal physical weapons still work. Do not spend a weapon slot on Frost damage: Geirrhafa is immune to it, while Fire deals increased damage.

The Howling Caverns route leads from the ice entrance to Geirrhafa.
For protection, wear the Fenris coat if you have it. Its 0.5× Frost resistance reduces Geirrhafa's raw Frost damage before armor and prevents Cold and Freezing. Frost-resistance sources do not stack, so adding a second source will not improve the coat's protection. You do not need the full Fenris set's Fire resistance for this fight.
The Howling Caverns entrance resembles a larger Frost Cave. Break through the ice wall, clear the Ulvs and Bats, and make room around the boss before committing to the fight. Enter with your fire option equipped and enough healing to recover from damage you cannot avoid.
The nova is the part of the fight you cannot solve with movement.
Treat the Ice Nova as Unavoidable Damage
Geirrhafa's ice nova cannot be blocked or dodged. He triggers it every 15 seconds when you are close: three circular Frost shockwaves travel outward, with 1.46 seconds between pulses. Each pulse has a raw Frost component of 90 damage.
The Fenris coat reduces that raw Frost component to 45 before armor; it does not necessarily represent the final damage you take. Keep your health high before the nova starts, and do not spend stamina trying to roll through it. Absorb the first pulse, wait 1.46 seconds, then endure the second and third. Heal before attacking again if the first pulse leaves you exposed.
The final pulse is your signal to resume the fight. The next danger is the frontal cone, which is easiest to avoid by refusing its preferred range.
Stay Out of the Frost Cone
Do not stop 2–6 meters directly in front of Geirrhafa. That is the range for his Frost cone, which cannot be blocked. The blast travels in a straight line, so moving to either side turns the attack into an opening instead of a direct hit.
Close positioning is safer than hovering at the edge of the cone's range: staying close can disable the cone and leaves Geirrhafa with his claw attacks. Use your normal shield, parry, or dodge judgment for the claws, then answer with Fire damage while he recovers.
Use this loop for a first clear:
- Start on Geirrhafa's side rather than in his centerline.
- Stay close to suppress the cone; if you lose that position, move laterally or go beyond the cone's range instead of stopping in midrange.
- Block, parry, or dodge the claws, then spend your Fire damage during his recovery.
- After the final nova pulse, re-enter from the side and repeat.
The key mistake is standing at medium range in front of him. Once Geirrhafa falls, continue to Hildir for the final step of the request.
Carry the Silver Chest Back to Hildir
Geirrhafa drops one Hildir's Silver Chest alongside his trophy. It is a 200-weight quest item, not a container with random loot; you do not open it or sort through it.

Return Geirrhafa's chest to Hildir to unlock the silver-tier clothing.
The Silver Chest cannot pass through a normal Wood portal, so plan a non-portal route before you pick it up. Returning it to Hildir unlocks the silver-tier cosmetic trades:
Returning it to Hildir unlocks these silver-tier cosmetic trades:
- Shawl dresses: brown, blue, and yellow
- Cape tunics: blue, red, and yellow
- Twisted headscarf: green
- Extravagant cap: green
- Tied headscarf: yellow
Pick up the chest, carry it back by a non-portal route, and give it to Hildir.
