Start with the coastline, not the cave icon. In an old Valheim world, the reliable way to find a Frost Cave is to choose Mountain terrain that your save never generated before the dungeon was added. The Frost Caves patch notes put the rule plainly: the dungeons appear only in previously unexplored areas. The official FAQ adds that an unexplored area is one where no player has set foot, within roughly 500 metres.
That makes your travel history the first filter. Use the route below to discard dead candidates before you spend a night climbing them.
The 500-Metre Rule Decides Your Search
Treat the FAQ’s roughly 500-metre figure as a practical buffer, not a tape measure. Cross off a Mountain if you or another player reached it, sailed close to its coast, or used it as part of an established route before the Frost Caves update. You do not need to have climbed the slope: the question is whether the world had already generated that area.
In a shared world, ask your group about old expeditions, boss runs, portal trips, and harbor approaches. A blank patch on the map is only a candidate; it does not replace your group’s memory of where players traveled.
Shortlist Mountain Dungeons With a Seed Map
A seed map is useful for choosing which Mountain dungeons deserve a trip. The Valheim.tools seed map describes its viewer as running the game’s world-generation algorithm and lets you filter location types. Use it to identify candidate Mountain dungeons, then compare each marker with your own travel history.
The map tells you where a location would be placed by the seed’s generator. It cannot tell you whether your save generated that area before Frost Caves existed. Prefer a large Mountain region on a coast or island your group never approached over a nearby marker surrounded by familiar routes.
Route an Untouched Mountain
Turn the shortlist into one clean expedition:

Sail directly to an untouched Mountain coast instead of circling familiar shores.
- Cross off every Mountain you landed on, searched, or passed close to before the update. Do the same for places another player remembers visiting.
- Pick one candidate on a separate coast or island, and make it your destination before launching the boat.
- Sail directly to it. Do not hug neighboring Mountain shores “on the way,” because that can invalidate the very region you planned to search.
- Land, mark the approach, and search that Mountain once. If the trip produces no entrance, record the candidate as checked and move to the next untouched region.
This route spends travel time where it can still produce new locations. A short trip to a familiar peak is faster only on the map; in an older save, it is often a guaranteed dead end.
Check the Cliff, Not the Summit
Frost Caves spawn randomly in the Mountains. They are typically embedded in cliffs at mid-to-high elevation, and the entrance is a stone arch cut into the slope. They are not revealed by a key item, so stone arch entrances are your practical landmark.

A Frost Cave entrance embedded in a Mountain cliff.
Inspect the visible cliff faces as you gain elevation instead of saving every search for the summit. When you find stone arch entrances, mark them immediately. If you complete a deliberate circuit of a candidate and find no entrance, stop mining the same slope and spend the next run on another Mountain dungeon.
The dungeon itself is a separate preparation problem. The Mountains still require frost protection on the approach, while the cave adds Ulv, Cultists, and Bats in confined rooms. Bring only the gear you would already take for a Mountain run; the location rule, not a heavier loadout, is what determines whether the cave can exist.
If Every Candidate Is Already Generated
If your best candidate islands are all familiar, empty Frost Cave markers are not a missing trigger to force. The official FAQ gives two fixes for new fixed world content: travel to new areas or start a new world.
Test the most separated Mountain dungeons first. Once your group has ruled out those untouched routes, stop searching the old seed’s generated peaks and make a new world if the caves are the goal.
FAQ
Can Frost Caves appear in an old Valheim world?
Yes, but only in areas that were still unexplored when the update generated them. Already-generated Mountains do not gain a cave retroactively.
A seed map shows a Frost Cave, but my Mountain is empty. What should I do?
Treat the marker as a shortlist, not a guarantee. Check whether a player reached the Mountain or its coast before the update. If so, choose another candidate on a genuinely untouched island.
What should I look for on the Mountain?
Look for stone arch entrances embedded in Mountain cliffs, especially around mid-to-high elevation. Stone arch entrances are the useful visual clue because Frost Caves are not revealed by a key item.
