The utility shutoff turns a familiar riverbank into base infrastructure. In Build 42, a fishing rod converts a visible fish school and your attention into a catch, while a fishing net converts Twine, Wire, and a safe retrieval route into passive rolls. The winning setup is not “rod versus net”; it is choosing which job you need the shoreline to do.
Build the food route first, then pick the rig. A rod pays you for watching the water. A net pays you for preparing materials, placing it correctly, and returning before it breaks.
Secure the Shoreline Before You Spend a Day Fishing
Fishing only helps after the power fails if you can reach natural water without turning every meal into a dangerous expedition. Rivers, lakes, and ponds can all be fishing spots, but the shoreline must also be close enough to defend and close enough to retrieve a net. A remote “perfect” tile is not a food plan if a zombie can interrupt every check.

A water-side camp turns the shoreline into a repeatable food route.
Use this decision table before you spend materials:
| Your situation | Use first | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You need food now and can guard the bank | Fishing rod | Active fishing rewards a good fish school and steady attention. |
| You are building, reading, or repairing nearby | Fishing net | A net can settle while you do another task. |
| You want a passive baited catch | Fishing net + Add Bait | Put chum on the placed net; do not throw chum into the water and expect it to affect the net. |
| You have neither Twine nor Wire | Loot or craft a rod | A fishing net needs both materials. |
| You need drinking water | A separate water plan | Fishing does not purify the water beside you. |
Place a fishing net by right-clicking the water and choosing the net action. Do not use the inventory’s ordinary Place command on the ground; that can leave the item incorrectly positioned or out of reach. Keep the tile a short walk from your base and leave room to approach it safely.
Follow the Ripples with a Fishing Rod
Build 42’s active fishing is about finding a fish school, not waiting at an arbitrary water tile. Splashes show where fish are concentrated, loud noise can frighten a school away for a while, and chum can attract fish to an area for a limited time. Move the rod to the activity instead of assuming the closest bank is best.

The rod recipe shows the line and hook requirements before you reach the water.
Build 42.20 is the current stable release. The precise timing and gear comparisons below use the detailed Build 42.19 fishing reference, while the official 42.20 overview confirms the same school, splash, noise, and chum loop.
A factory fishing rod is the dependable find. To craft one, use a wooden stick, two line items, and a paperclip, nail, or fishing hook; the recipe becomes available automatically at Fishing 4 or Carving 4 in the detailed Build 42 reference. The crafted rod is weaker than a factory rod, but it gets you fishing without waiting for a perfect loot run.
Protect the line before chasing better hooks:
| Component | Best practical choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Line | Premium Fishing Line | It wears more slowly under tension than Fishing Line or Twine. |
| Hook | Fishing Hook, forged hook, or bone hook | These attract better than a paperclip; nails are the baseline. |
| Bait | Worms, maggots, crickets, grasshoppers, cockroaches, or the right artificial lure | Build 42 uses species preferences rather than one universal best bait. |
The controls are a separate problem from shoreline safety. Aim at the water and cast with left-click, keep holding left-click to reel, and hold right-click to ease tension when the meter climbs too high. Releasing line prevents a snap; never reeling will not land the fish.
Fishing also leaves you exposed. Bring a guard when the bank is unsafe, keep an escape route, and stop before fatigue turns a bite into a bad fight. Fish are more active during the documented 04:00–06:00 and 18:00–20:00 windows, which receive a ×1.2 time multiplier in the detailed Build 42 reference. Weather and temperature also change the bite calculation, so rotate to another fish school or use chum instead of burning bait at a quiet tile.
Let Fishing Nets Work While You Work
A fishing net is the better post-shutoff tool when your character has other jobs to do. The Build 42 recipe needs both 10 Twine and 5 Wire. It is learned automatically at Fishing 6, or through the Fishing Guide occupation or Angler USA — May 1993. The Angler trait helps with rod recipes but does not, by itself, teach the net recipe.

Build 42 combines active rod fishing with passive nets.
Place the fishing net on a valid water tile, then use Add Bait on the placed net if you have chum. Chum thrown into the water is a separate action for active rod fishing and does not improve the net’s own rolls. An unbaited fishing net can return useful small catches such as bait fish, frogs, crayfish, and tadpoles. A baited net adds another catch pool that can include catfish.
The detailed Build 42.19 net rules reward a short routine:
- The base unbaited roll is 1 in 8 per settled hour, or 12.5%.
- A check settles up to 20 hours, even if you leave the fishing net longer.
- Checking after more than 15 hours carries a 20% chance that the net becomes a Broken Fishing Net and that check produces no catch.
- A check awards Fishing XP; the net is not part of the Trapping skill.
- Season, time of day, nearby noise, and fish-school abundance do not change the net’s base roll.
Check the fishing net before the 15-hour break-risk threshold, collect the catch, refresh the bait, and return to base. Passive does not mean maintenance-free.
Cook for the Catch You Actually Have
Fish size turns storage and processing into the real limit. Keep a sharp knife with your rig: Slice Fillet turns a whole fish into two Fish Fillets, and Halve Fillet can split a bulky fillet again. Cook the result before eating. Build 42’s vanilla fishing loop has no salt-cure or smoke-fish shortcut, so match each trip to the heat and cooking capacity you can use.

Fish sizes make knife work and cooking part of the fishing loop.
Small net catches can become food, bait, or material for chum when the rod’s fish school is quiet. If you land a large fish, process it at the shore or at the nearest safe cooking point instead of carrying an awkward raw catch through a dangerous trip home. That is the difference between fishing as a reliable route and fishing as another pile of food that spoils in a container.
If you have to choose one first, put a crafted rod in your bag and save Twine and Wire for a fishing net once Fishing 6 is within reach. The rod gets you learning; the net earns its place when the shore is safe enough to check.
