Cyberpunk 2077's four Combat quickhacks may look like four damage icons, but raw tooltip damage is the least useful way to choose among them. Their stronger effects depend on the state before the upload: the target's biology and armor, the distance between enemies, and how much RAM you have already spent.

That makes the best damaging quickhack a sequencing decision, not a tier-list winner. Short Circuit becomes nastier after Cyberware Malfunction, Overheat grows into a weapon amplifier, Contagion can be cashed out with fire, and Synapse Burnout wants you to spend RAM before it lands. Read the target and the queue correctly, and every upload has a job.

Choose by Fight State, Not Raw Damage

Start with the enemy and the shape of the fight. A cyberdeck is required to equip these programs, and every Combat quickhack below consumes RAM, so each upload should answer a specific problem.

Fight state Reach for One-line job
Mech, robot, drone, or turret Short Circuit Deliver immediate Electrical damage to a machine.
One durable or armored target Overheat Apply sustained Thermal damage while you keep pressure on the same enemy.
Several organic enemies close together Contagion Spread Poison damage through the cluster.
One target must fall after you have spent heavily Synapse Burnout Turn a depleted RAM state into a Physical-damage finisher.

Short Circuit Punishes Machines and Primed Elites

Against a mech, robot, drone, or turret, Short Circuit needs no setup to justify the upload: its Electrical damage receives an extra bonus against those machine targets. Use it as the direct answer when the enemy type already supplies the advantage.

Against a durable organic enemy, Short Circuit becomes a combo payoff instead. Cyberware Malfunction disables the target's cyberware and increases the damage it receives. From Tier 3 onward, Short Circuit gains 10% damage for each Cyberware Malfunction stack, and that increased damage also explodes the affected enemy's weak spot.

Tier 4 adds a three-second EMP damage-over-time effect, giving the electrical hit a brief damaging tail.

Best sequence: Upload Short Circuit directly to a machine. Against a durable organic enemy, upload Cyberware Malfunction first and Short Circuit second.

Overheat Rewards You for Keeping the Target Under Fire

Overheat is strongest when the target will survive long enough for you to keep attacking it. The initial upload applies Thermal damage over time, while another upload at Tier 2 extends Overheat's duration. At Tier 3, each successful attack on the affected enemy extends Overheat itself by 0.5 seconds while it is active.

That extra time creates room for Overheat's higher-tier pressure. Tier 4 strips 5% of the target's armor each second, up to a 40% reduction. Against one armored enemy, continuing to land weapon hits can therefore prolong the damage-over-time effect while the armor penalty builds underneath it.

At Tier 5, those attacks also gain Thermal damage equal to 10% of their Physical damage; the Iconic version raises the conversion to 20%.

Best sequence: Upload Overheat, keep attacking, then re-upload it at Tier 2 or higher if the target survives and you want to extend the burn.

Detonate Contagion When the Crowd Closes Up

A clustered fight calls for different timing. Contagion deals Poison damage over time, so let it run when organic enemies will stay close enough for the spread to keep earning value. At Tier 2, it can jump to two nearby enemies within 8 meters and stack twice; Tier 3 raises the spread to four enemies. Contagion is ineffective against mechs, robots, drones, and turrets.

Environmental explosives can solve a crowd without spending RAM on a two-hack detonation.

At Tier 4, you can cash out that remaining damage. Apply Contagion, let it reach the targets you want, then inflict Burn or upload Overheat. The affected targets detonate and lose Contagion, turning a spreading damage-over-time effect into an area-damage payoff.

Best sequence: Upload Contagion, wait for it to spread, then apply Burn or Overheat. Skip the detonation when the group is stable and the poison can finish its work without a second upload.

Make Spent RAM Work for Synapse Burnout

Synapse Burnout reverses the usual resource logic: the RAM you have already spent becomes damage. At Tier 3, its Physical damage increases by 10% for each RAM unit currently spent, up to 300%. The Iconic version raises that ceiling to 400%. Queue it after expensive uploads only when the remaining RAM can still cover its cost.

Queue order matters when Synapse Burnout needs earlier uploads to spend RAM first.

Tier 4 turns successful finishes into momentum. Each neutralization reduces Synapse Burnout's RAM cost by 2 for 15 seconds, and the discount can stack three times. If more targets remain, those stacks make another finisher easier to afford before the window closes.

If the queue will leave too little RAM, activate Overclock before committing so Health can pay the shortfall. At Tier 5, Overclock increases Synapse Burnout's spent-RAM damage bonus by 100%, and a neutralization extends Overclock by three seconds.

Best sequence: Activate Overclock if the queue needs it, spend RAM on the setup uploads, then land Synapse Burnout while the bar is low.
