Every DayZ player knows that rain makes their gear heavier. Far fewer know that it is a four-step price list, that the first step is free, and that a long list of clothing in the game never pays it at all.
Wetness does not seep into an item gradually. It multiplies that item's own weight by one of exactly four values, chosen by which of four wetness tiers the item currently sits in. Cross a boundary and the figure jumps; drift around inside a tier and nothing happens. And every item carries a hard ceiling on how wet it is allowed to get, so a Raincoat and a Pea Coat standing in the same storm are not having the same experience at all: one of them will never gain a single gram, and the other will end up weighing exactly twice what it did when you found it.
That per-item ceiling is what turns weather into a loadout decision, and it produces the result that makes any of this worth measuring. A civilian in a soaked Pea Coat and a Burlap Backpack — a deliberately worst-case set, every piece of it able to reach the top tier — loses very slightly less stamina ceiling than a soldier in full military kit, while carrying nearly twelve kilograms less. The size of your wet tax is set by which items you are wearing, not by how much you are carrying, which makes it a problem you solve at the loot pile rather than in the storm.
Wetness Is a Four-Step Multiplier, and Damp Is Free
Solving it at the loot pile means knowing the price list, and the price list is far shorter than almost anyone assumes. In the shipping 1.29 script, a wet item's weight is a single multiplication: the weight written in that item's config, multiplied by one value pulled from a five-entry table by the item's current wetness level. That is the entire mechanism. There is no interpolation between entries, no term for how long you have been standing in the rain, no dependence on the item's condition — a ruined jacket and a pristine one weigh the same wet or dry — and nothing else in the calculation at all. Bohemia's own debug string for the figure spells it out as (config weight) * (Wetness Modifier), and that is all it has to say on the subject.
The game tracks wetness internally as a value from 0 to 1, then buckets that value into the tiers you already know by name. Here is the complete table, with the Pea Coat walked through every step of it:

Five tiers, four prices. Dry and Damp are both defined as ×1.00, and that is not a rounding artefact or a value nobody got around to tuning — the two constants sit next to each other in the same block of the code, deliberately identical. Damp is free. A garment can absorb a fifth of its total wetness capacity, show as Damp in your inventory, and cost you exactly nothing. Everything most players describe as "getting a bit wet in the rain" is happening entirely inside a tier that has no weight at all.
Weight moves in jumps, and only at a boundary
The other thing the table hides is that it is a staircase, not a ramp. The game only recalculates an item's weight when the item crosses a tier boundary: the wetness value changing triggers a level check, and only a genuine level change flags the weight as dirty and recomputes it. Drift inside a tier does nothing whatsoever. A Pea Coat sitting at 0.30 wetness and the same coat at 0.49 are both in the Wet band, both on ×1.33, and both weigh 4 256 g — identical, despite one of them being far closer to soaked. Then one more update pushes it to 0.50 and it jumps to 5 312 g in a single step. You do not get gradually heavier in DayZ. You get 1 056 g heavier, all at once, and then nothing happens for a while, and then you get another 1 056 g heavier.
Follow the Pea Coat all the way down and the shape of the tax is obvious: 3 200 g dry, still 3 200 g damp, 4 256 g wet (+1 056 g), 5 312 g soaked (+2 112 g), and 6 400 g drenched (+3 200 g). That last figure is the hard ceiling of the entire system. ×2.00 is the largest multiplier in the table, so the absolute worst any single item can ever do is double — one hundred percent of its own dry weight added, and not a gram more. Larger figures circulate for wet gear in DayZ, and none of them are in the code.
Not every item gets that far, though, and the Combat Jacket is the cleanest illustration. Run it through the same ladder and it goes 1 510 g dry, 1 510 g damp, 2 008 g wet, 2 507 g soaked — and then simply stops. Leave it out in a storm all night and 2 507 g is where it stays. It cannot reach ×2.00 at all. Why it stops there is the whole of the next section; for now, note only that the ceiling of the rule and the ceiling of a specific item are two different numbers.
The absorbency stat everyone cites belongs to a different game
That leaves the most popular wrong answer to deal with. Ask around and you will be told that each item has an absorbency value that decides how much water it soaks up and therefore how heavy it gets. The field genuinely exists — but it defaults to 0 on the base inventory class, it is set on exactly six items across every clothing config in the game (an armband, a tracksuit jacket, a police jacket and three belt and sheath items), and a search of the entire official script tree returns zero lines that ever read it. Nothing in DayZ Standalone consults absorbency for weight or for anything else. It is a live, functioning field in the old ARMA 2 DayZ Mod, which is almost certainly where the belief came from and why it has survived so long. If you have been picking clothing on the assumption that a lower absorbency means a lighter soaking, you have been optimising a stat the game does not read.
These are 1.29 defaults, and a server can rewrite them
Every figure here is from stable 1.29, build 1.29.163451 — the Road to Badlands build released on 15 July 2026. None of the wetness constants moved in that patch, or in the one before it: the multipliers and the tier boundaries are byte-identical across 1.28 and both 1.29 stable revisions, so anything you learn here has been true for a while and is likely to stay true. The one caveat worth stating once, for the whole article: all of these values are defaults. A server can override the multiplier array (and the stamina parameters that come later) through cfggameplay.json, which is gated behind a server config flag and validated to exactly five entries. Official and vanilla servers ship the numbers above. A heavily modded community server may not, and this is the only place that distinction is going to be repeated.
The practical version is short. Stop picturing wetness as a slider that creeps your weight upward while you jog through a shower. There are four prices, the first one is free, and moving between them is a threshold crossing rather than a slide — which means the difference between "slightly damp" and "actually costing you stamina" is one single boundary, crossed in one single update. What decides whether you ever cross it is not the weather. It is which boundary your specific item is allowed to reach.
Every Item Has a Wet Ceiling, and a Lot of Gear Never Gains a Gram
That boundary has a name in the config files, and it is the single most useful field in this whole subject: varWetMax. Every item that can get wet at all carries one, and it is a hard clamp — when the game raises an item's wetness it clamps the new value to that maximum, so the item's wetness can never climb past it, and therefore neither can the tier it sits in, and therefore neither can its multiplier. An item is not "resistant" to water in any gradual sense. It simply stops.

Firearms, magazines and ammunition have no wetness value in their configs. The wet tax is a clothing-and-backpack tax.
Across the 869 clothing, vest and backpack classes in the configs, only six values ever appear in that field, which collapses the entire game's wardrobe into four price brackets:

Read that right-hand column carefully, because it is the whole calculation. Since the multipliers are ×1.33, ×1.66 and ×2.00, the added weight is 33%, 66% or 100% of the item's dry weight — near enough a third and two thirds to do in your head, and exactly double at the top. Nothing else is involved. And you do not need the configs to look any of this up: every item page on the community wikis publishes the tier outright as "Max wetness", written as Damp, Wet, Soaked or Drenched. The number you need is already on the page you were probably reading anyway.
Most of what you carry is not in the system at all
Before you even get to clothing, consider what the rain is allowed to touch. Firearms, magazines and ammunition have no varWetMax in their configs — searching the M4, AKM and Mosin 9130 configs, the magazine attachment config and the ammunition config returns zero occurrences of the field. They are not water-resistant. They are outside the system. Wider than that: of 360 parsed gear classes across books, camping, containers, cooking, crafting, drinks, food, medical, navigation, optics, radio and tools, 344 have no wetness value whatsoever. Your canteen, your rice, your morphine, your compass and your rangefinder weigh precisely the same in a thunderstorm as they did in the sun. The handful of loose exceptions are curiosities rather than loadout concerns — a Rag genuinely doubles from 80 g to 160 g, and a Barrel with holes doubles from 10 kg to 20 kg, which is a problem for base builders and nobody else.
So picture a survivor with a rifle, spare magazines and a full ammunition load coming to 12 000 g, wearing a complete leather outfit — Leather Hat 320 g, Leather Jacket 3 100 g, Leather Pants 590 g, Leather Shoes 380 g, Leather Gloves 200 g and a Leather Backpack 1 300 g, 5 890 g in total. Every leather piece there caps at Damp. Every gram of the guns and ammunition is outside the system. That survivor's total load is 17 890 g, and it is 17 890 g in a five-minute downpour, 17 890 g after swimming a river, and 17 890 g at noon in clear weather. There is no scenario in vanilla DayZ in which that loadout gets heavier. The rain has nothing to charge.
The free list is longer than you think
Leather is not a special case. Almost a quarter of all clothing in the game — 194 classes of 869 — sits in the free bracket, permanently on ×1.00 no matter how long it soaks:

Note what that list is not sorted by. The free bracket is not the light bracket. The heaviest single garments in the game are in it: Chainmail at 10 000 g, Chainmail Leggings at 8 000 g, the Firefighter Jacket at 7 400 g, a Chestplate at 5 000 g. You can walk into a storm wearing ten kilograms of chainmail and walk out of it weighing exactly ten kilograms of chainmail. Meanwhile a 330 g pair of Athletic Shoes, which you would never think of as a wetness problem, is varWetMax = 1 and doubles.
Why a heavy item with a low ceiling beats a light one with a high ceiling
This is where the two variables interact, and it is the part most gear advice gets backwards. The tax on an item is dry weight × (multiplier − 1). Both terms matter, and the weight term is usually the larger one, because dry weights across the wardrobe span two orders of magnitude while the multiplier only spans a factor of two.
Run it on the two loudest examples. The Pea Coat is 3 200 g and caps at Drenched, the worst ceiling in the game: it pays the full 100%, +3 200 g. The Plate Carrier is 12 000 g and caps at Wet — two tiers short of the maximum, a ceiling most players would describe as good — and it pays only 33%. But 33% of 12 000 g is +3 960 g, and the Plate Carrier is therefore the single largest wet-weight penalty you can wear, beating the maximum-ceiling Pea Coat by 760 g while never getting worse than Wet. It takes roughly three times the dry weight for a Wet-capped item to match a Drenched-capable one, and the Plate Carrier is 3.75 times the Pea Coat's weight.
The same arithmetic produces some near-ties that are worth internalising. A Tanker Helmet (980 g, Drenched) adds +980 g. A Combat Jacket (1 510 g, Soaked) adds +997 g. Different ceilings, different weights, effectively identical bills.
The eight biggest payers, all recomputed from config weight and ceiling:

Three of those eight — the Plate Carrier, the Press Vest and the Winter Military Coat — never reach ×2.00 at all. They are on the list purely on mass.
The other end: the bag that pays nothing and protects what is inside it
Put the Plate Carrier next to the Drybag Backpack and you have the full range of the system in two items. The Drybag is 600 g, caps at Damp, and adds nothing under any conditions. But its ceiling buys something the free-weight column does not show, because of how the game handles containers.
A bag's multiplier applies only to the bag's own config weight. It is never applied to the contents — every item inside is weighed separately and applies its own multiplier, or none at all. What the bag's wetness does control is whether the contents get wet in the first place: an item inside a container only starts soaking once the container itself reaches Soaked (0.5 wetness), and even then the contents can only chase the bag's wetness, never exceed it. The Drybag caps at 0.249. It can never reach 0.5, so it can never wet a single thing you put in it — which is the mechanical reality behind the wiki's "gear stays dry whilst being carried". The same threshold quietly protects a couple of others: any bag capped at Wet or below, the Hunter Backpack among them, sits under the 0.5 line and cannot pass wetness to its cargo either.
One recent shift worth knowing, since it moved items between brackets rather than inside one: update 1.29 lowered the maximum wetness of the Moto and Gorka helmets from Wet down to Damp, taking both out of the paying bracket entirely. The community config dumps in circulation still predate that patch, so treat any wet-weight figure you see published for those two helmets as stale.
You can read your worst case straight off your kit
You can price your worst case before you leave the loot pile, and you never need to guess. Go slot by slot, take each worn item's dry weight, look up its max wetness, and add nothing for Damp, a third for Wet, two thirds for Soaked, all of it for Drenched. Anything capped at Damp is a permanent zero and can be crossed off forever. Everything you are carrying rather than wearing — every gun, magazine, round, can of food and bandage — can be crossed off too.
And do not shortlist by ceiling alone. A "water-resistant" 12 kg vest can cost you more than a fully absorbent Pea Coat, because a third of something enormous beats all of something ordinary. It is the product that matters, not either factor on its own.
You can now name the largest number in your own kit, in grams. Grams are not what kills a sprint, though — so the next question is what those grams are actually worth.
What a Soaking Costs: Kilograms, Ceiling Points, Seconds
Grams become stamina through a single line of arithmetic, and the game does not care where the grams came from. It adds up the weight of everything you are wearing and everything you are carrying — each item having already applied its own wetness multiplier before it goes into the sum — and turns that total into a stamina ceiling:

A full military kit soaked through loses 13.15 ceiling points — the same as a civilian carrying nearly twelve kilograms less.
ceiling = 100 − ((load in kg − 6) × 1.75), with a hard floor of 5.
The first 6 kg is free. After that every kilogram costs a flat 1.75 ceiling points, forever, in a straight line. Nothing bends it, and nothing else in the loadout matters — not what the weight is, not where it is stored, not whether it got heavy because you picked something up or because it rained on you. Grams are grams.
That linearity is the useful part, because it means the wet delta you calculated in the last section is portable. You do not need to know your total load to know what a soaking costs you. Whatever your starting weight, the loss is the same slope: take the extra grams, divide by 1 000, multiply by 1.75. A standing sprint drains 4 stamina per second, so dividing that answer by 4 converts it straight into seconds of sprint gone. Every kilogram of wet weight is 1.75 ceiling points and just under 0.44 seconds of sprint, and that conversion holds at 18 kg exactly as well as it holds at 38 kg.
It is also worth knowing what load doesn't touch, because it explains why the ceiling is the only number in this article. Weight does not slow your sprint down, and it does not slow your recovery. Refilling the bar works at exactly the same rate whether you are naked or overloaded — and in fact faster than the published figures suggest, because idling, walking and jogging all earn a regeneration bonus the community tables leave out. So a soaking never makes you slower and never makes you slower to recover. It makes each tank of stamina smaller, and that is the whole of the damage.
The same bill from two very different loadouts
Here is where the numbers stop being tidy and start being interesting. Take two survivors, both carrying the same 12 kg of guns, ammunition, food and medical supplies — a stated assumption, and one that changes each survivor's starting ceiling but not one gram of their wet delta, since none of that gear has a wetness value at all.
The first is in full military kit: Ballistic Helmet, Combat Jacket, Plate Carrier with Pouches, Combat Pants, Combat Boots, Tactical Gloves and a Field Backpack. The second is a civilian in a Tanker Helmet, Pea Coat, Cargo Pants, Athletic Shoes and a Burlap Backpack — five items, every one of them varWetMax = 1, so the worn set does not just get heavier, it exactly doubles.
Soak both to their individual maximums and run the arithmetic:

Check the soldier's row by hand and you can see there is no trick in it: 38.83 − 6 = 32.83 kg over the free allowance, × 1.75 = 57.45 points burned, leaving a ceiling of 42.55. Dry, the same sum gives 55.70. The difference is 13.15 points, which at 4 per second is 3.29 seconds of sprint that no longer exists.
Now look at the two right-hand columns together. The soldier is carrying 11.87 kg more than the civilian before either of them gets rained on, and the storm charges them the same price. The gap between the two bills is 77 g of wet delta — 0.13 ceiling points, about three hundredths of a second. They start in completely different places and stay there: the soldier's ceiling is roughly 21 points below the civilian's whether both are dry or both are drenched. What rain takes from each of them is, for practical purposes, identical.
That is the finding worth carrying out of this section, and it is not intuitive. The size of your wet tax is decoupled from how heavy you are. It is set entirely by which items you are wearing, because the delta is the sum of each worn item's dry weight times its own ceiling — and a civilian in five maximum-absorbency garments can assemble as much wet delta out of 7.4 kg of clothing as a soldier assembles out of 19.3 kg of it. The Plate Carrier alone is 3 960 g of the soldier's 7 517 g, which is 6.93 of the soldier's 13.15 ceiling points and 1.73 seconds on its own. On the civilian, the Pea Coat and the Burlap Backpack between them account for 5 600 g — 9.80 points, 2.45 seconds — out of a total load that a fresh spawn would consider light.
Absolute sprint budgets, for anyone who wants them, land at 7.68 s → 4.39 s for the soldier and 12.87 s → 9.62 s for the civilian. One caveat applies to every absolute sprint budget in this article — these two pairs and the one in the counterweight kit below — and to nothing else here: they use the sprint floor of 25 stamina that this site's DayZ wiki and the community wikis publish, while the shipping 1.29 script registers the sprint consumer at 20 (StaminaMinCap 5 + 15) and reads as though a running sprint continues to zero — so your real budgets may run somewhat longer than shown. The seconds lost are unaffected either way, because the same offset sits on both sides of the subtraction and cancels out of the difference.
The counterweight: when a soaking barely registers
None of that means every rainstorm is expensive. Swap to a realistic mid-game inland kit — Boonie Hat, Hunter Jacket, Cargo Pants, Combat Boots, Hunter Backpack, same 12 kg of gear — and the same soaking looks almost harmless. The worn set goes 6 650 g → 9 314 g, a delta of just 2 664 g. Total load 18.65 kg → 21.31 kg. Ceiling 77.86 → 73.20: −4.66 points, −1.17 seconds (13.22 s → 12.05 s in absolute terms).
The kit is barely lighter than the drenched civilian's — 18.65 kg against 19.44 kg dry — yet it pays just over a third of the bill. The reason is entirely in the ceilings, not the scales. The Hunter Jacket is the same 3 200 g as the Pea Coat but caps at Wet instead of Drenched, so it adds 1 056 g where the coat adds 3 200 g. The Hunter Backpack is 1 400 g capped at Wet and adds 462 g, where the 2 400 g Burlap Backpack capped at Drenched adds 2 400 g. Two slots, and almost the entire difference between a soaking you notice and one you do not.
So the honest range for a realistic loadout in vanilla 1.29 runs from zero to about thirteen ceiling points, or zero to roughly three and a quarter seconds of sprint. Neither of these examples goes anywhere near the ceiling's hard floor of 5 — you would need to be carrying north of 60 kg for that — so for any kit you would actually run, the wet tax is a flat, predictable subtraction rather than a cliff.
Price your own soaking before it happens
The recipe is short enough to do in your head while you are still looting:
- Total the wet delta of your worn items using the rule from two sections back — nothing for Damp, a third for Wet, two thirds for Soaked, all of it for Drenched, and nothing at all for anything you are merely carrying. That sum is your wet delta in grams.
- Divide by 1 000 and multiply by 1.75. That is your ceiling loss in points.
- Divide that by 4. That is your sprint loss in seconds.
Run it once on your current kit and the answer will almost certainly be dominated by two items — one vest for the soldier, one coat and one bag for the civilian, exactly as the arithmetic above worked out. That is the real decision this arithmetic hands you — not "should I avoid the rain", but "are the two items paying most of my wet tax worth what they cost me every time the weather turns". The answer for a Plate Carrier is probably yes, because nothing else in that slot protects you. The answer for a Burlap Backpack is much less obvious.
Of course, a bill this size is only worth worrying about if you actually get charged it in full. Which raises the next question: how long does a storm need to work on you before it collects — and is there anything that collects faster?
Rain Takes Minutes, a Swim Takes Six Seconds
It collects on a six-second heartbeat — and yes, something collects a great deal faster than a storm does.

Rain needs 78 seconds to charge anything and 240 to reach maximum. Stepping into that water does it to every worn slot in six.
The environment routine that decides all of this runs every three seconds, and every second run — so once every six seconds — it evaluates wetness on everything you are wearing. That evaluation is not a blend of conditions. Water contact takes priority over everything, and rain is applied only when you are actually out in it, rather than inside a building, under a roof or sitting in a car. Everything below is what those two paths do with their six seconds, and the gap between them is enormous.
Rain charges by the minute, and only if it means it
The rain branch adds a fixed amount of wetness per update, computed as 0.01 × 2 × rain intensity × (1 + 0.25 × wind). Rain intensity is a 0-to-1 value the server's weather system drives, and it has to clear 0.05 before the game considers it to be raining at all. Wind can accelerate it by up to a quarter. That is the whole formula — no term for your clothing, no term for how exposed you are, no per-item variation.
At full intensity with no wind it works out to +0.02 of wetness per six seconds, which turns the tier boundaries into a timetable:

Two things about that first row are worth pulling out. The Wet figure is the one place where the tick rate shows through: 0.25 ÷ 0.02 is 12.5 updates, and wetness only ever moves in whole updates, so the crossing actually lands on the thirteenth — 78 seconds, not the 75 the division implies. The other two cells in that row are exact whole-update counts and need no such rounding, and so are the six below them. And the Drenched column is the last charge there is. ×2.00 arrives at 0.8 wetness, so once you have stood in a full downpour for four minutes the rain has taken everything it can take; the remaining minute to complete saturation costs you nothing further.
The bottom row is the one that changes how you read weather. Rain intensity is not a switch, and a quarter-strength shower needs a full five minutes of unbroken exposure just to reach the first tier that costs anything — twenty minutes to saturate. Down at the drizzle end, just above the 0.05 threshold that counts as rain at all, reaching Wet takes something like twenty-five minutes of standing in it. A great deal of the rain you run through in DayZ is, in weight terms, completely free — and there is no way to know which kind you are standing in, because intensity is a continuous 0-to-1 value the server's weather system drives and the game never puts a number on it anywhere you can read.
Rain does reach everywhere, though, which is the one place it is not gentle. The rain branch uses the complete slot list — headgear, mask, eyewear, gloves, armband, body, hips, vest, back, legs, feet, all eleven — plus whatever is currently in your hands. What it never touches is the shoulder or melee slots, which are not in any of the lists: a slung rifle is never rained on, only a held one.
Water contact does the same job in one update
Immersion does not use that formula at all. It looks up your depth, and hands out a flat amount of wetness per update that dwarfs anything the sky can manage:

Read the top row again, because it is the section's whole point. A wetness delta of 1.00 is not a large increment — it is the entire scale, applied in one go, so every wettable item you are wearing jumps straight to its own personal ceiling in a single update. And you do not need to be diving to be in that band: while you are swimming, the game reports your water level as 1.2 m if you are stationary and 1.5 m the moment you are moving at walk speed or faster. Any swim you actually make progress on is the top row.
So the comparison the whole section exists to make: full-intensity rain with no wind needs 240 seconds to put an item on its maximum multiplier, and 78 seconds to charge you anything at all — 192 and 60 with the wind fully behind it. A swimmer does the same thing to eleven slots at once in six seconds — including the backpack, which is how a river crossing quietly starts a wet bag passing wetness down to its contents under the container rules from earlier. One river is worth four minutes of thunderstorm, and it is over before you have finished crossing.
Below swimming depth, the depth bands are effectively a checklist of what you were willing to walk into. Wading waist-deep maxes out hips, legs and feet in 12 seconds and touches nothing above the waist. Ankle-deep water maxes your boots in 18 seconds and leaves the rest of your kit alone entirely. Treading water without moving is still the 0.66 band — 12 seconds to maximum on everything but your helmet, mask and eyewear, which stay dry as long as your head does.
There is a second bill in the deep water, and it is not weight. Jogging through water above the engine's high water-level restriction drains stamina at 4 per second — the standing sprint rate — while you are only jogging. The same water that maxes out your gear in six seconds is simultaneously emptying the smaller bar it just gave you, at the fastest drain rate in normal movement.
The drop icon appears exactly when the bill starts
You do not have to track any of this by eye, because the game already publishes it. After each wetness pass, the routine takes the wetness of the wettest item worn directly on you and compares it against 0.25 — and that comparison is what sets the water-drop status icon on your HUD. That is the same 0.25 that is the boundary between Damp and Wet, and therefore the exact value at which the weight multiplier first leaves ×1.00.
The drop icon is not a cosmetic weather notification. It is the moment your loadout starts costing you stamina, published on the HUD for free. Before it appears, no worn item has crossed into a paying tier and your load is exactly what it was in clear weather. Two consequences follow. First, the icon tracks your wettest worn item, so its appearance means at least one item is charging you, not all of them. Second — and this is the neat one — if every item you are wearing caps at Damp, the maximum can never reach 0.25 and the icon can never appear at all, no matter how long you swim.
The practical version is a rule about when to care. A rain shower you will be out of inside a minute is genuinely free, and a light one may never charge you even if you stay in it. That is not an excuse to ignore weather, but it does mean sprinting for cover the instant the sky opens is usually wasted effort. Water is the opposite: plan every river crossing as a guaranteed, immediate, full soaking of all eleven worn slots, your backpack included, priced at whatever your kit's ceilings add up to, with no version of it that only gets you slightly wet. And when the drop icon appears, treat it as the notification it is — something you are wearing has just gone up in price, and it will stay up until you do something about it.
Which is the urgent part. A single river crossing can put your entire kit on its maximum multiplier in six seconds. So how fast can you get that weight back off?
Wring, Roof, Fire — and Why Rain Takes the Fire Away
Fast, if you are willing to crouch. Otherwise slowly enough that the answer is effectively "you don't."

A fire dries roughly twelve times faster than body heat, and the rate divides by your distance from it — which is why they are sitting that close.
There are exactly three ways wetness leaves your gear in vanilla DayZ, and they are separated by more than two orders of magnitude in speed. One of them is an animation. One of them takes about seven minutes. One of them takes an hour and a half. And the fast one is the one a rainstorm specifically takes away from you, which is the part that turns all of this from a measurement into a problem.
The clock you are on if you do nothing
Start with the baseline, because it is what every other option is measured against. When the environment routine finds no water contact and no rain landing on you — because the sky has cleared, or because you are under cover — it dries everything you are wearing at a rate built from the same base value for every single garment. No clothing, vest or backpack config in the game overrides it: nine config files, zero overrides. The Raincoat and the Pea Coat, when they are drying, dry at exactly the same speed. The only lever anywhere in the system is how close you are standing to a heat source.
With no heat source at all, that rate works out to 0.00087 of wetness per six-second update. The configs write it as 0.00029, which is a per-three-second-tick figure; the environment loop multiplies it by that tick rate and applies the result once per six-second update, so 3 × 0.00029 = 0.00087 is what actually lands on your clothes. Run it against the tier boundaries you already know:

The steps are uneven because the tier bands are uneven — the Drenched band is only 0.2 wide, so the first and most expensive multiplier step is also the quickest one to shed. That is the single piece of good news in the table. Everything else about it is bleak: an hour and a half of real playtime, uninterrupted, to get a soaked kit back to costing you nothing. Nobody plays that way. Treat "waiting it out" as what happens by accident while you are doing something else, never as a plan.
Wringing is the only answer that works in the field
Which is why the Wring Clothes action is worth more than its reputation. It appears on an item at 0.25 wetness or above — the same threshold as the drop icon, the same threshold as the first tier that costs anything, so the action becomes available at precisely the moment it becomes worth doing. It is a crouched, full-body continuous action, and it is blocked outright while you are standing in water.
What it does is exact: it drops the item one wetness tier. Drenched lands somewhere in the Soaked band, Soaked lands somewhere in the Wet band, Wet lands somewhere in Damp. The resulting wetness value is randomised inside that lower band, so you cannot predict where the item ends up — but the tier is deterministic, and the tier is the only thing the weight multiplier reads. So one wring is one multiplier step, always. ×2.00 → ×1.66 → ×1.33 → ×1.00. You always know exactly how many you need before you start: three from Drenched, two from Soaked, one from Wet, and the last one is the one that actually zeroes the bill. That final wring leaves the garment sitting in the Damp band rather than bone dry, which does not matter in the slightest, because Damp is free.
The cost is the animation, not a wait. On the drenched civilian from earlier, one wring on the Pea Coat alone takes it from 6 400 g back to 5 312 g — 1 088 g off your load for one crouched action, with no fire, no shelter and no weather requirement beyond not being knee-deep in the river you just swam. Which is the one catch worth planning around: after a swim, every wettable thing you own is at its ceiling and the action is unavailable until you are out of the water. Get onto the bank first, then start wringing.
It is per item, though, and that is the honest limit. A full soaking means three actions each on every wettable garment, and you are crouched and animation-locked for all of them. Do not work through your whole kit. Work through the two or three items carrying the largest wet delta and stop — you already know which ones those are.
A fire is twelve times faster, and distance is the whole story
Register a temperature source and that per-tick increment jumps from 0.00029 to 0.0035 — a little over twelve times faster — then gets divided by your distance from it in metres. That divisor is not a detail. It is the entire fire strategy:

A fireplace heats fully within 2 m and at all within 4 m, and past that outer radius it is rejected as a source entirely and you are back on the 86-minute clock. So the seven-minute figure belongs to sitting almost on top of the fire; standing at the edge of the full-heat radius roughly doubles it. Note also that only one registered source's distance is ever used, so building a second fire next to the first buys you nothing.
All of these are approximate. The arithmetic is exact on the constants, but it assumes the environment loop keeps ticking on schedule, and wetness only ever moves in whole six-second updates.
Rain shuts the fire out at 0.1 intensity
Everything above is true in clear weather. In rain, the fire is mostly not an option, and the game is deliberate about it.
You cannot ignite a fireplace outdoors once rain intensity reaches 0.1, unless there is a roof above it. Rain "counts" from 0.05, so that threshold sits barely above the point where the weather system considers it to be raining at all — and well below the quarter-intensity shower that section four showed needs five full minutes just to charge you a single multiplier step. A drizzle too weak to meaningfully wet you is already more than enough to deny you a fire. On top of that, a fireplace at 0.2 wetness will not light, one at 0.4 will not burn, and rain at 0.4 or above actively soaks and cools an open fire while it is burning. The game even ships the messages for it: "The fire went out because of the rain." and "Cannot reignite fireplace in rain."
That is the trap in one sentence. The weather that puts the weight on you is the same weather that removes the fastest way to take it off. The fire is twelve times faster than your body, and during the exact conditions that soak you, you cannot have one.
Unless you have a roof. Roofs are the exemption on the ignition check, and they are the reason the ordering below is what it is.
The order: wring, roof, fire
Getting under cover does more than shelter the fireplace, because of how the environment loop is built. It runs exactly one of its three branches every six seconds — water, rain, or drying — and stepping inside a building, under a roof, or into a car does not slow the wetting down. It switches branches. You stop getting wetter and start getting drier in the same update, at the full ambient rate, with no transition. The one thing to allow for is that the roof check is a raycast refreshed only every ten seconds, so give it that long to register before you decide the game has not noticed you.
So the sequence that actually survives contact with a storm:
- Wring first. It is immediate, it is free, it works in the rain, it works in the open, and it is the only route that removes a multiplier step in an action rather than in minutes. Get out of any water you are standing in, crouch, and wring the two or three heaviest wettable items you are wearing. That is the bulk of your wet tax gone before you have moved.
- Get under a roof second. Not primarily as fire infrastructure — as the branch switch. Cover stops the rain branch dead and starts the drying branch immediately.
- Light the fire third, and only once you have that roof or the rain has genuinely stopped. Then sit close to it, because the rate divides by your distance.
The thing not to do is wait. Ambient drying is not a recovery plan on any timescale a session runs on, and standing in the open hoping the sky sorts you out means you are on ×2.00 for the next hour and a half while the fire you would need is unlightable anyway.
All of which is a repair, not a fix. Every wring costs you a full-body animation, in the crouch, once per tier, once per item, every single time the weather turns. Doing that correctly forever is still worse than never being billed in the first place, which points at the only permanent answer: gear that never sends you the invoice.
The Rain-Ready Loadout: Which Slots to Swap, and What Each Swap Costs
There is a zero-tax option in every slot but one, and a complete kit can be assembled out of them. What nobody tells you is the price on the other side of that trade. Zero wet tax is not free — it is bought with insulation, with armour, or with a crafting bench and a lot of tanned leather. So the useful question is not "what is the driest possible loadout", which almost nobody should run, but "which two or three of my slots are carrying enough wet delta to be worth paying for". This section is the price list for that decision.

The wet tax is decided here, in clear weather, one slot at a time — not in the storm.
The per-slot swap table
Every figure below is that item's config weight, and the same weight after it has reached its own personal ceiling. The right-hand column is the only one that matters for this decision: it is what a full soaking adds, forever, no matter how long you stand in the storm.

Four of those rows are worth staring at before you read another word. The Ballistic Helmet is 20 g heavier than a Tanker Helmet dry and 960 g lighter soaked, which makes it a swap with no downside at all. The Cold Operation Boots carry the same top insulation value as Combat Boots and pay 446 g less when wet — 0.78 ceiling points, 0.20 seconds — which is a smaller number but the same kind of upgrade. And the vest column contains no true zero: the closest thing to one is the Smersh Vest, which only gets close by weighing 220 g.
Two jackets, both consequences: Patrol Jacket or Combat Jacket
The body slot is where this decision is most often made badly, so work it all the way through on the two jackets most players are actually choosing between.
Dry, the Combat Jacket costs you 110 g more than a Patrol Jacket — 1 510 g against 1 400 g. That is the comparison most gear guides make, and on that comparison the Combat Jacket wins outright, because it has the better insulation and 110 g is nothing.
Now soak both. The Patrol Jacket caps at Damp, so it is still 1 400 g. The Combat Jacket caps at Soaked, so it is 2 507 g. The gap has gone from 110 g to 1 107 g — 1.94 ceiling points, just under half a second of sprint, for one garment. That is the first half of the bill.
The second half is the part that makes the swap lopsided rather than close. Wetness strips insulation on exactly the same schedule it adds weight: 90% of nominal at Damp, 50% at Wet, 10% at Soaked, and −15% at Drenched, where the garment stops insulating and starts actively chilling you. So at the moment the Combat Jacket is 1 107 g heavier, it is also delivering 10% of the insulation you chose it for — while the Patrol Jacket, which physically cannot leave the Damp band, is still sitting at 90% of its own. The Combat Jacket's advantage in the sun is real. In the rain it does not merely shrink; it inverts, and it adds a kilogram to what you are carrying while it does.
That is the shape of most of these swaps. You are not usually trading a good stat for a bad one. You are trading a stat that holds up in the weather for one that does not.
The two endpoints: 17.20 kg in any weather, and 9.12 points paid for nothing
A completely tax-free kit does exist, and it is worth knowing where the ceiling sits, because it is the number every other loadout is measured against. Ballistic Helmet 1 000 g, Raincoat 1 700 g, Patrol Pants 700 g, Cold Operation Boots 1 000 g, Leather Gloves 200 g, Drybag Backpack 600 g — 5 200 g of worn kit, every slot capped at Damp. Add the same 12 kg of guns, ammunition, food and medical supplies used earlier and the total is 17.20 kg. Soak it in a river, stand in it through a four-minute downpour, swim the whole coast in it: it is 17.20 kg afterwards, and the ceiling is 80.40 points, wet or dry. There is no weather event in vanilla DayZ that moves either figure.
Then there is the cleaner comparison, because it holds the slots constant. Six slots, two philosophies, both around 17.5 kg dry:

The civilian set is the lighter of the two dry — by 366 g — and it starts with the marginally better ceiling. Get both survivors wet and the civilian is carrying 4.84 kg more than the survivor in leather, having gained 5 210 g of water weight that the leather kit was never eligible to gain. Nine ceiling points and two and a quarter seconds of sprint, handed over for a set that was fractionally better on the loot screen.
The honest caveat has to travel with that table, and it is a large one. The leather set is craft-only. The Leather Jacket is not currently spawning on official servers; the pieces are made from Tanned Leather with a Leather Sewing Kit, five hides for the jacket alone, which means a knife, a garden lime or tanning setup, and a real detour. Treat it as a crafting goal you build toward on a long-lived character, not as something to look for in a police station. What you get for the work is the one option that asks nothing in return: zero wet tax and the highest insulation value in the configs, in the same garment. Every other zero-tax body option asks you to give something up — the Raincoat sits near the bottom of the insulation range at 0.25, and the Patrol Jacket runs 30% to 60% depending on which variant you found. Both are still standing at 90% of that when a Combat Jacket has collapsed to 10%, which is usually the more honest way to read the comparison.
Which two slots to actually swap
Do not rebuild your whole kit. Almost all of the delta is in two or three slots, and past those the swaps stop paying for themselves.
Open your inventory and read the added column against what you are wearing. If you are in a Pea Coat, that is 3 200 g of wet delta in a single garment — 5.60 ceiling points, 1.40 seconds — and a Patrol Jacket or Raincoat takes all of it to zero while also being lighter dry. If you are running a Burlap Backpack, that is another 2 400 g, or 4.20 points and 1.05 seconds, and a Drybag Backpack removes it entirely and stops the bag passing wetness down to your cargo as well. Those two swaps alone remove most of the worst realistic wet delta in the game. Note that a bag's carrying capacity is a separate question with a separate answer — this table ranks bags only by what rain costs you.
If you run a Plate Carrier, keep it. It is the single largest wet-weight item in the game at +3 960 g every time you get properly wet, and there is no honest way to soften that. But nothing else in the vest slot comes close to what it stops, and the alternatives that pay less pay less because they protect less. It is the one slot where the right answer is to accept it and find the four kilograms somewhere else: the body, back and head rows above will give them back to you and then some.
And if your route involves water rather than weather, take the back and the feet first. They are the cheapest wins available — a Drybag Backpack, and Cold Operation Boots or Wellies — because the feet are the slot that gets wet at ankle depth on a shoreline you never intended to swim, and the back is the slot that decides whether your cargo comes out of the river dry.
So: open your inventory, find the two worn items with the largest number in that final column, and swap the one whose replacement you can actually get your hands on today. Drybag Backpack for the back, Patrol Jacket or Raincoat for the body, Cold Operation Boots or Wellies for the feet, Ballistic Helmet for the head, and the Plate Carrier stays where it is. Then start treating every river crossing as a decision rather than a shortcut — because now you know exactly what the shortcut costs.
