Getting Off the Coast Alive: A Chernarus Route for New Survivors

Use wells, building functions, and two concrete inland branches to leave Chernarus without spending your first life in Cherno or Elektro.

Your first life on Chernarus should be a departure, not a house-by-house tour. The coast gives a fresh survivor enough food, water, and clothing to start moving, but it also concentrates players and infected around the same easy targets. Secure the essentials, choose a route with a named next stop, and leave before the coast turns a supply run into a fight over empty buildings.

Secure Water Before You Leave the Coast

Find the nearest named settlement and its water pump before you commit to a direction. Wells are Chernarus’s constant clean-water source. Fill any bottle or canteen you find, drink at the pump, and keep the container for the next leg. A full container turns your route into a navigation problem instead of a hydration emergency.

A rural hand-pump well is the first deliberate stop on a new survivor’s route.

Use the coast for a short checklist:

  • a cutting tool for opening food and basic survival tasks;
  • one melee weapon for isolated infected;
  • food and a drink container;
  • clothing with usable storage and insulation;
  • a bandage or other way to stop bleeding.

You do not need to clear the whole spawn town. If a house is empty, move to the next useful building. If you spawn inside Chernogorsk or Elektrozavodsk, leave toward the inland side rather than starting a full city sweep. Both cities have more loot buildings, but their streets also create more sightlines, infected encounters, and reasons for other survivors to watch you.

Loot Buildings in Priority Order

The building’s function is a better clue than its appearance. DayZ’s Central Loot Economy uses location tags to decide what kinds of items can spawn in a building, so search the structures that solve your current problem.

  • Houses and village buildings: Start here for food, clothing, backpacks, and small survival items.
  • Wells: Refill here whenever the route passes through a settlement. A hamlet may not have one, so do not leave a full town without checking.
  • Medical centers: Use them when you need bandages or medical supplies. Gorka, Staroye, Stary Sobor, and Zelenogorsk each have a medical center, which makes them useful planned stops.
  • Police stations: Treat them as a weapon opportunity, not a safe shelter. They can contain firearms and police gear, but their value also makes them common places for players to watch.
  • Deer stands: Check one when it is beside your line of travel. They have little loot, but can provide hunting equipment, weapons, backpacks, and clothing without forcing a detour into a town.
  • Industrial buildings, sheds, and garages: Look here when you need a tool or repair item rather than another shirt.

At each settlement, follow the same order: pump, houses, medical building if needed, then the exit. Search the police station only when getting a firearm is more important than avoiding a predictable point of conflict. That rule keeps the first town from consuming the route.

Use the Branch That Matches Your Spawn

Pick one branch and keep its next waypoint visible on your map or compass. The goal is not to visit every named place; it is to move from the coast to a town where you can resupply without reversing direction.

West and south coast: Balota → Pavlovo → Zelenogorsk

If you spawn west of Chernogorsk, use Balota as the coastal start and turn inland toward Pavlovo. Stay on the civilian side of Pavlovo: its military area is a contaminated zone, so it is a destination for NBC-equipped runs, not a first-hour shortcut. Continue to Zelenogorsk, refill, and use its medical center if you need supplies.

From Zelenogorsk, choose the next waypoint by what you still lack:

  • Go to Myshkino when food, water, clothing, and medical supplies are already covered and you want the western continuation.
  • Go toward Stary Sobor when you still need another town’s houses or its medical center before moving farther inland.

This branch keeps you out of Chernogorsk’s main streets while still giving you a clear coastal start, a village transition, and a large inland resupply point.

East coast: Solnichniy/Berezino → Dubrovka → Gorka → Novy Sobor

If you spawn on the eastern coast, leave Solnichniy or Berezino by turning inland toward Dubrovka, then continue to Gorka and west toward Novy Sobor. Gorka is the useful checkpoint: refill there, check its medical center, and decide whether you have enough supplies to keep going.

If your spawn is near Elektrozavodsk, do not route through the city. Travel north to Staroye, use the settlement as your first resupply point, then continue northwest to Gorka and west to Novy Sobor. This keeps Elektrozavodsk out of the run and replaces its dense streets with smaller, named stops.

Leave the Route When the Kit Is Ready

A route succeeds when it gives you options. Before leaving Zelenogorsk, Gorka, or Novy Sobor, make sure you can reach the next settlement without turning back for water, food, or a basic medical item. Keep your inventory organized enough to grab a new tool or weapon without dropping the supplies that got you inland.

Do not fire in a town just to test a weapon. Isolate infected with melee attacks when the area is quiet, close doors to break pursuit, and leave after a fight has cost more resources than it gave you. A deer stand can support a later hunting plan, but it is not a reason to abandon the route or shoot from a settlement.

Once the next leg is supplied, choose the job for this life: follow the western route toward Myshkino, continue from Novy Sobor toward the central towns, or turn toward military loot with enough equipment to survive the attention. The important decision is no longer what to loot on the coast; it is where your inland plan begins.
