Project Zomboid Build 42 ZombieLore: Which Settings Decide Your Death?

Project Zomboid Build 42's Apocalypse and Extinction presets do not make every zombie stat harder. Here is what shortens your reaction window, what adds pressure, and what is mostly flavour.

Build 42's Apocalypse and Extinction presets are not simple easy and hard sliders. They create different failure windows. Apocalypse gives you time to see a mistake develop; Extinction turns the same doorway, fence, or retreat into a reaction test. If you are tuning Custom Sandbox, start with the setting that explains your deaths, not the one that merely makes the world feel busier.

Start with the settings that shorten your reaction window

The current Build 42 preset data shows where Extinction actually moves the threat. Both modes use Speed 4, the Random band; Extinction's danger comes from the separate sprinter, sense, cognition, and access values.

Two Project Zomboid survivors armed inside a house
Priority ZombieLore setting Apocalypse Extinction Practical effect
Direct contact SprinterPercentage 0 6 Six percent of zombies can sprint in Extinction; Apocalypse has none.
Direct contact Strength 2 1 Extinction hits harder; lower is stronger on this scale.
Direct contact Toughness 4 1 Extinction zombies are tougher; lower is tougher on this scale.
Access DoorOpeningPercentage 0 10 Ten percent of Extinction zombies can work a door handle.
Navigation Cognition 3 4 Basic Navigation versus Random behaviour.
Pursuit Memory 2 1 Normal versus Long memory.
Detection Sight 5 2 Extinction uses the sharper sight band.
Detection Hearing 5 2 Extinction uses the sharper hearing band.
Group finish ZombiesCrawlersDragDown false true Crawlers can join a group takedown in Extinction.
Surprise DisableFakeDead 1 2 Extinction's value-2 choice lets “killed” zombies pretend to be dead.

For Memory, 1 is Long and 2 is Normal. For Sight and Hearing, lower is sharper. The numbers look reversed only because these dropdowns encode named bands rather than a simple “more is harder” scale.

This is why “Extinction has faster zombies” is an incomplete explanation. Speed remains 4 in both presets; the 6% sprinter share is the change that can erase a retreat route. The preset also raises ZombieConfig's population multiplier from 0.65 to 1.2, starts at 1.5, and peaks at 2.0, so that sprinter share is backed by a larger population.

Sprinters and drag-down decide whether contact becomes a death

Sprinters shorten the distance your combat routine assumes. A shambler gives you time to push, back up, turn, and choose a target. A sprinter makes the same animation sequence a timing problem. Strength and Toughness matter after contact: Extinction's Strength 1 and Toughness 1 amplify the cost of a missed shove or bad swing, but they do not create the first contact. If your deaths begin at a doorway, fix SprinterPercentage, Cognition, or DoorOpeningPercentage before weakening every zombie.

ZombiesCrawlersDragDown is the next phase. With it enabled, a group that has already put you on the ground can include crawlers in the grab. A crawler pile is not a safe side of a fence; clear the whole approach before you treat the route as open.

Cognition, Memory, Sight and Hearing decide whether escape works

Extinction's Cognition 4 is Random, while Apocalypse's Cognition 3 is Basic Navigation. That changes how consistently zombies navigate; it is not a damage multiplier. DoorOpeningPercentage adds another route into a supposedly safe room, with Extinction's value 10 making door handles part of the threat model.

Visibility and noise become part of the route when you leave a fight.

Memory 1 is Long and Memory 2 is Normal. Long memory punishes the habit of breaking line of sight and immediately reusing the same corner. Disengage farther away and change buildings instead of assuming one closed door has ended the chase.

Sight and Hearing are both 2 in Extinction and both 5 in Apocalypse. Because the lower Build 42 bands are sharper, Extinction's approach phase is shorter even before a sprinter appears. To keep Extinction's population without making every distant noise an immediate combat roll, raise Sight and Hearing toward Apocalypse's values first.

Armor and fence settings lengthen sieges, not first contact

The advanced fields are easy to mistake for the main durability controls. ZombiesArmorFactor and ZombiesMaxDefense govern how much protection zombie clothing can provide and the maximum defense value that clothing can reach. The current generated Build 42 preset leaves them at 2.0 and 85; neither is the headline difference between Apocalypse and Extinction.

FenceThumpersRequired is a crowd-pressure setting. Its current default is 50 zombies before a tall fence begins taking this group damage. It changes whether a fence is a long-term perimeter or a temporary delay, not how quickly one zombie kills you. Lower it when you want hordes to reshape a base; leave it alone when you are tuning personal combat.

DisableFakeDead is the exception here. Apocalypse's value-1 choice allows some zombies to pretend to be dead, while Extinction's value-2 choice lets some zombies you kill pretend as well. It creates a second surprise at a corpse, not more zombie health.

Tune Custom Sandbox in the order your run fails

Use the preset as a starting point, then change one death cause at a time:

  1. If the first contact is too fast, set SprinterPercentage to 0 and DoorOpeningPercentage to 0, then use Cognition 3 while you learn the route logic.
  2. If a broken line of sight does not buy enough space, move Memory from 1 to 2 or 3, then raise Sight and Hearing from 2 toward 5.
  3. If groups kill you after a knockdown, turn ZombiesCrawlersDragDown off before changing Strength or Toughness.
  4. If the map is exciting but too dense, lower PopulationMultiplier or PopulationPeakMultiplier instead of making every zombie fragile.
  5. If your base never feels permanent, lower FenceThumpersRequired only after the escape rules are giving you readable deaths.

If you make one change first, make it the one named by your last death: sprinters for lost reaction time, senses for failed escapes, drag-down for group takedowns, and population for an unsustainable map.
