Valheim 1.0 does not ask you to abandon your old world, but it does draw a line under everything you did before the update. Iron Gate says the achievement system starts tracking when you download 1.0, so the useful question is not whether a save is old. It is whether that character and world can still record eligible actions after tracking begins.
Your Old World Survives; Achievement Tracking Does Not
Your existing saves remain where you left them when 1.0 arrives. You can keep the same base, map, and multiplayer campaign. Completed achievement progress is the exception: the new statistics system begins counting from the moment you download 1.0.

An achievement tied to killing Eikthyr therefore requires another Eikthyr kill, even if the same character defeated him hundreds of times before 1.0. An old save is a continuity option, not a completed checklist. It preserves the world you made while giving the achievement system a new starting line.
There is a separate reason to consider a new world. Iron Gate says an old world can receive new content, but biome generation works properly only in areas that were not explored before the update. Your base may be perfectly usable while an already-explored region gives you a less complete first look at 1.0 content.
| What you keep in an old save | What starts over |
|---|---|
| Your world, base, and existing campaign | Achievement statistics |
| Existing characters and their history | Achievement-linked actions after you download 1.0 |
| New content in previously unexplored areas | Any completed achievement from before 1.0 |
Cheat Flags Decide Whether a Save Can Earn
Valheim treats cheat history as an eligibility rule, and the character and world can be affected separately.
- Most devcommands lock the character and world save. Iron Gate specifically gives “spawn” as an example: using commands of this kind permanently locks the current character and world save from earning achievements. Characters that used cheats before 1.0 are marked too.
- Freefly is named as an exception. The FAQ does not turn that exception into a general safe list, so avoid testing other commands in an achievement world.
- Spawned items can temporarily block a clean character. A spawned item is visibly marked. If a non-cheated character picks one up, that character enters a temporary cheat state and cannot unlock achievements while carrying it. Throw out all cheated items to become eligible again.
- Hammer-mode is also temporary cheat status. The world modifier locks achievements while active, even if no devcommand was used.
After 1.0, the game adds a confirmation before entering a cheated state to reduce accidental lockouts. That protects against misclicks; it does not restore a character or world that was already permanently marked.
A New World Changes Generation, Not the Achievement Rule
Starting over is not required to play 1.0. It is Iron Gate’s recommendation for the best experience because a new world gives the update unexplored terrain across the map. If your priority is an existing build or a server that friends have played for years, keeping that world is valid. You will simply need to revisit achievement-linked actions after you download 1.0, and you should expect previously explored regions to be a poor place to wait for new biome generation.

An existing Valheim world remains playable after the 1.0 update
If your priority is a clean achievement run, pair a new world with a character that has no locking cheat history. That combination gives you the clearest record: the terrain is generated for the new campaign, and every tracked milestone belongs to the post-update run. The new world itself is not what activates achievements; downloading 1.0 is.
Build a Clean Pair Before You Chase the First Unlock
Make the decision before you mix old and new progress:
- Keep an old world when its base, map, or multiplayer history is the point. Treat achievements as goals you will perform again after the update.
- Start a new world when you want the fullest first look at 1.0 terrain and a run that begins cleanly.
- Move achievement hunting to a clean character and world if either one carries a permanent cheat flag.
- Do not transfer spawned items into that run. Picking one up creates a temporary cheat state, even when the character who picks it up never used a command.
- Leave hammer-mode off in the world where you want achievements.
The practical launch plan is simple: preserve the old save for continuity, but create a separate clean character-and-world pair if achievement completion matters more than carrying the old campaign forward.
