DayZ Sprint-and-Jump Loadouts: Weight Caps for Armor, Weapons, and Ammo

A practical DayZ 1.29 weight guide for armor, weapons, ammunition, and medical kits built around fixed sprint-before-jump targets.

If you want to jump after a controlled sprint in vanilla DayZ, build around a time target instead of a vague ‘light’ kit. The current 1.29 rule set gives the first 6 kg for free, removes 1.75 stamina-cap points for every kilogram after that, and stops a standing sprint when the bar reaches 25. With the 4-per-second standing sprint drain, a 15-second sprint-before-jump target needs an 85-point ceiling and a total load no higher than 14.57 kg; 10 seconds needs 26.00 kg, and 5 seconds needs 37.43 kg.

Those are carried-load ceilings, not guaranteed survival builds. They include the clothes you are wearing, the weapon in your hands, loaded magazines, and the exact state of medical items. Use the 15-second sprint target for a mobile patrol, the 10-second sprint target for a balanced rifle kit, and the 5-second sprint target only when protection and firepower matter more than a long escape.

Start with the stamina ceiling, not the backpack

The useful question is how much standing sprint remains before the bar hits the 25-point stop. The ceiling is 100 when the carried load is 6 kg or less. Above 6 kg, the ceiling is calculated as 100 − 1.75 × (load − 6), subject to the game’s lower floor. Divide the resulting ceiling minus 25 by the 4-per-second drain to estimate standing sprint time.

That gives three practical caps:

The 15-second sprint target is the demanding one: it leaves only about 8.57 kg above the free-load threshold. A jump itself costs 25 stamina, so the table is a planning boundary for reaching the jump with the bar still available, not a promise that every movement action will feel identical on every server.

Set a dry baseline before counting combat gear

Count the complete survivor, not just the inventory grid. Clothing, shoes, the item in your hands, a weapon attached to your body, and the contents of every container contribute to carried mass. A dry clothing shell in the current item data is about 3.03 kg in the tested baseline, leaving roughly 11.54 kg for a 15-second kit before armor, firearms, or medicine are added.

Treat these numbers as a versioned worksheet. The article’s item masses use the 1.29 code and item-data boundary recorded during research; community servers can differ through configuration and mods, and wet clothing is a separate multiplier rather than a free rounding error. Leave a margin instead of aiming at 14.57 kg exactly. A single loaded magazine or a changed item state can move a careful loadout across the threshold.

Armor is the first major tradeoff

Armor consumes the same load budget as everything else. A Plate Carrier gives the strongest protection among the tested cores but leaves the least room for a primary weapon, magazines, and medical supplies. A Ballistic Vest is the middle choice for a 10-second build, while an Assault Vest supports the 15-second core by sacrificing protection and retaining useful storage.

The helmet choice matters too. A Ballistic Helmet adds protection but costs more than a light head covering, so it should be counted during the armor pass rather than treated as a cosmetic swap. The correct comparison is not ‘plate versus no plate’; it is protection versus the sprint time you are actually trying to preserve.

For a 15-second sprint target, start with the Assault Vest core and verify the dry shell before adding a rifle. For a 10-second sprint target, the Ballistic Vest is the safer middle ground. For a 5-second sprint target, a Plate Carrier can fit, but only if you accept a much smaller reserve for ammunition, medicine, and wetness.

Count the primary and ammunition once

A loaded weapon package includes the primary itself, its loaded magazine or internal rounds, spare magazines, loose ammunition, and the chambered round. Count each component once; do not count a magazine as empty if the loadout is meant to leave the server ready to fight.

The tested current-file comparisons use the M4-A1, CR-527, and Pioneer. The M4-A1 package with its loaded magazine and planned ammunition is about 0.634 kg heavier than the comparable light rifle package in the worksheet, while the CR-527 ammunition package is about 0.401 kg. Swapping the M4-A1 core for the Pioneer changes the firearm portion by about 0.70 kg in the same item-data snapshot.

That is why the 15-second sprint target pairs naturally with the CR-527 and a modest 7.62x39 supply, the 10-second target with an M4-A1 and Ballistic Vest, and the 5-second target with an M4-A1 and Plate Carrier. The 5.56x45 and 7.62x39 counts are not interchangeable: decide how many loaded magazines and loose rounds the scenario needs, then add their mass to the total rather than estimating by slot count.

Keep the medical kit compact and state-specific

The compact medical package in the worksheet is three Bandages, an IV-ready 0.50 kg Saline Bag, and 0.044 kg of Tetracycline, for about 0.934 kg total. That state detail matters: an unprepared Saline Bag is 1 kg in the item data, and an IV Start Kit is a separate item if you carry it. Do not silently substitute one for another.

The medical kit is therefore easiest to budget after the armor and weapon choice. In a 15-second sprint target, keep the three-bandage, IV-ready saline, and antibiotic package, then spend the remaining margin on ammunition. In a 10-second build, the same kit is usually workable if you do not add every optional treatment. In a 5-second build, medicine is still worth carrying, but each additional item should be justified against the protection and firepower you chose.

Match the core to the target and leave margin

Use the following three cores as starting points, then re-total the exact server-ready state:

  • 5-second sprint target: Plate Carrier, M4-A1, loaded magazines, and the same medical baseline only when the threat justifies it. Stay under 37.43 kg; the point is a short burst into a jump, not sustained mobility.

Recheck the load after rain, after changing a medical item’s state, and after adding ammunition. If the loadout only works at the mathematical cap, it does not really work in the field. Choose the sprint-before-jump target first, total every carried item once, and let the remaining kilograms be a safety margin rather than free inventory.
