A Car Battery in DayZ can start a vehicle, power base lights, or run a Field Transceiver. It is a shared power resource, so the useful decision is not merely finding one—it is deciding when a battery should stay mobile and when it can become part of your base.
Find a Car Battery in Industrial Loot
Search industrial buildings, garages, gas stations, barns, equipment sheds, vehicle wrecks, and damaged cars. The Car Battery is a 3×3 item weighing 10 kg, so carry it only when you know whether you are taking it to a vehicle, a charger, or a protected base.

Keep the essential vehicle parts ready before you commit the battery.
For a car, prioritize the parts that determine whether the engine can run:
- A Car Battery
- A Spark Plug
- A Radiator with water
- Wheels
- Gasoline
Repair a damaged Car Battery with an Electrical Repair Kit. When you install it in a vehicle, use a Wrench to secure it; a battery left unsecured can be removed by another survivor who finds the car.
Charge a Battery in a Running Car or at a Charger
A vehicle recharges its Car Battery while the engine is running, and headlights consume battery power. That makes the vehicle the convenient charger only after the battery has enough charge to start the engine. If it cannot crank, stop trying to start it and use a Battery Charger or another charged battery.

A visible battery and engine bay make a charging or repair stop easier to understand.
To recharge it with a Battery Charger, assemble:
- A Power Generator with a Spark Plug and gasoline
- A Cable Reel
- A Battery Charger
- The Car Battery
Connect the Cable Reel to the generator, connect the reel to the Battery Charger, then switch on both the generator and the charger. Attach the Car Battery to the charger and wait for the charge indicator to show progress. Keep the generator and charger in a defensible position: the setup is valuable, noisy equipment that can reveal where you work.
Once a battery has enough charge to start a vehicle, let the engine do the recovery work. Use the generator-and-charger setup when the battery is too weak to start the car, when you are preparing a spare, or when the battery has already been assigned to a base.
Power Construction Lights with Metal Wire
Attach Metal Wire to the Car Battery to use it as a small base power source. That connection can run Construction Lights and Xmas Lights without a generator, which helps when you need temporary lighting or have not built a full power setup.
Lighting is a choice, not a free upgrade. A lit camp is easier to spot, and a battery tied to a light is no longer ready for a vehicle. Switch lights off when they are not helping you work, and disconnect the wire when you need to move the battery. For a long-running base, keep a Battery Charger available so the light does not consume the only battery you needed for transport.
Do not use the lighting connection as a substitute for the radio connection. Metal Wire is for the base-light setup. The Field Transceiver accepts a Car Battery directly in its own power slot.
Give the Field Transceiver Its Own Battery
The Field Transceiver is a portable R-105 base radio station found in military locations. It can send and receive across the server, but it needs a Car Battery to operate. Put the battery in the transceiver, switch it on, and set the frequency you want to use.
Treat the radio battery as dedicated equipment once the transceiver is part of your base or group plan. Taking it out to repair a car makes the radio silent; leaving it in the radio means the next vehicle repair still needs another source of power. If you have only one Car Battery, keep it available for the vehicle until the engine is running. Then add a second battery or a charger before you commit power to lights or a server-wide radio.
The efficient loop is straightforward: use a battery to start the car, recharge it with the running engine, and build a charger-supported spare before the battery becomes permanent base equipment.
