How to Find the Stronghold in Minecraft
Your journey to the End begins not in a dark dimension, but in the Overworld, with a simple throw. In Minecraft, the path to the final boss is a treasure hunt, and your first task is to locate the hidden Stronghold—the underground fortress containing the gateway to your destiny.

Marking locations during the search for a stronghold.
The key to this search is the Eye of Ender. You craft it at a Crafting Table by combining [1] Ender Pearl and [1] Blaze Powder. To get these, you'll need to hunt Endermen in the Overworld at night or in caves for their Ender Pearl drops, and venture into a Nether Fortress to defeat Blazes for their Blaze Rods, which you can grind into Blaze Powder (one rod yields two powder).
Craft at least 15 Eyes of Ender. You'll need them for the search and the portal later, and they have a 20% chance to break each time you use one.
To find the Stronghold, hold an Eye of Ender and throw it by pressing [Right-Click]. It will fly into the air and float in the direction of the nearest Stronghold before falling. Follow its trajectory. The most reliable method is triangulation: throw an eye, walk 500 to 1000 blocks in that direction, and throw another. Where the two flight paths intersect is roughly where you should start digging down. When your thrown eyes stop flying horizontally and instead dive straight down into the ground, you're standing directly above your target.
Strongholds generate deep underground, so once you've pinpointed the area, start mining down carefully. You'll know you've found it when you break into rooms made of mossy stone bricks. From here, it's a matter of exploration—follow torch-lit corridors, block off dead ends, and listen for the sounds of lava or silverfish to guide you toward the deepest chamber.
With the Stronghold located, you've completed the first major leg of your Minecraft endgame. The portal room awaits.
How to Activate the End Portal in Minecraft
You’ve found the Stronghold and navigated its dark corridors—now for the moment you’ve been building toward. The Portal Room is the final chamber, and activating the gateway is your ticket to the ultimate challenge in Minecraft.

Prepare for combat before stepping through the activated gateway.
This room is unmistakable: a ring of 12 End Portal frames encircles a small pool of lava. Some frames may already hold an Eye of Ender, but you’ll need to fill every empty slot. Walk around the frame and [Right-Click] to place an Eye into each one. The instant the final slot is filled, the portal ignites with a starry void, ready for your leap.
Before you jump in, take a moment to secure your position. The Portal Room often contains a Silverfish spawner block. Use your pickaxe to [Left-Click] and destroy it to stop endless swarms from interrupting you.
Now, here’s the crucial step most guides emphasize: set up a small base right here. Place a Bed on a safe spot of stone brick to set your spawn point, and stash a Chest with backup gear nearby. Trust me—if things go sideways in The End, you’ll respawn right at the portal instead of miles away in the Overworld.
With the portal active and your spawn secured, you’re standing at the threshold of Minecraft’s endgame. Take a breath, double-check your inventory, and step through. The dragon awaits.
Best Gear and Preparation for the Ender Dragon
This is it—the final boss of Minecraft. You’re not just stepping through the End Portal for a casual visit; you’re walking into a hostile arena where the dragon’s home-field advantage is brutal. Your survival hinges on what you bring with you. Proper preparation doesn’t just make the fight easier—it makes it possible. Let’s get you kitted out.

Gathering resources is the first step in gear preparation.
Essential Armor and Weapons
Your gear is your lifeline. At a minimum, you need Full Diamond Armor. Upgrade to Netherite Armor if you can, but diamond will get the job done. The enchantments are non-negotiable: slap Protection IV on every piece you can. This dramatically reduces damage from the dragon’s swoops and the Dragon’s Breath clouds. The single most important enchantment, however, is Feather Falling IV on your boots. The Ender Dragon’s knockback will send you flying, and this enchantment turns a lethal fall into a manageable stumble.
For offense, you need two dedicated weapons. Your primary melee tool is a Sharpness V Sword (diamond or Netherite) for when the dragon lands. For ranged combat, a Power V Bow is essential. Pair it with the Infinity enchantment, or bring at least two full stacks of arrows. You’ll be shooting a lot.
If you can’t get Infinity, bring three stacks of arrows. You’ll use them to break crystals and chip away at the dragon, and running out mid-fight is a death sentence.
Critical Consumables and Tools
This fight is as much about utility as it is about combat. These items address specific, deadly threats in the End.
- Slow Falling Potions: Brewed from an Awkward Potion and a Phantom Membrane, these are your get-out-of-jail-free card. Drink one before climbing any pillars or as soon as you enter. If the dragon knocks you into the void, this potion gives you precious seconds to throw an Ender Pearl back to safety.
- Water Bucket: A classic for a reason. Right-click on the ground to place water and negate fall damage if you’re knocked off a pillar. It also creates a safe zone from Endermen, as they won’t pathfind into water.
- Carved Pumpkin: Wearing this in your helmet slot makes all Endermen completely neutral, saving you from a swarm of angry teleporting mobs on top of the dragon. The downside is reduced vision, but the trade-off is worth it for your first attempt.
- Golden Carrots: Bring a full stack. This high-saturation food provides the fastest health regeneration, letting you heal up quickly between the dragon’s attacks without wasting time eating constantly.
- Ender Pearls: Pack 6-10 pearls. If you get launched off the main island, right-click to throw one at the ground beneath you to teleport back. They’re your emergency escape from the void.
The Support Inventory
Round out your inventory with these staples:
- Building Blocks: Two stacks of Cobblestone or End Stone. You’ll need them to pillar up to caged crystals and to bridge if your spawn platform is far from the main island.
- A Pickaxe: You’ll need it to break the iron cages protecting some crystals. An Efficiency enchantment speeds this up.
- Optional Potions: A Strength II potion can speed up the melee phase, and Regeneration or instant Healing splash potions are great for emergencies.
With this kit, you’re not just surviving—you’re controlling the arena. Every item has a purpose, and together, they turn an overwhelming boss fight into a manageable challenge. Gear up, take a deep breath, and let’s go claim that egg.
Ender Dragon Phase 1: Destroying the End Crystals
Welcome to the main event. You’ve prepped your gear, activated the portal, and now you’re staring down the void of The End in Minecraft. This first phase is your most critical objective: systematically destroy the End Crystals atop the Obsidian Pillars. Ignore the dragon for now—if you don’t take out these healing sources, you can’t win.

Identify the Threat
The arena is a central island of End Stone, surrounded by ten Obsidian Pillars. Most are topped with glowing End Crystals that fire continuous white beams at the Ender Dragon, healing her rapidly. Your first job is to scan the battlefield. You’ll notice two types of crystals: exposed ones you can shoot from the ground, and Caged Crystals encased in iron bars on the tallest pillars. Both must be destroyed.
Before you start climbing, listen. The dragon’s swooping roar is your cue to get down. If you hear her charging while you’re on a pillar, be ready to move.
Destroying the Crystals
Start with the easy targets. Use your Bow to shoot any exposed End Crystals from a safe distance on the ground. A direct hit will shatter them in a satisfying explosion. For the Caged Crystals, you’ll need to get up close.
This is where your Strategy: Pillaring comes in. Use a stack of Cobblestone or Scaffolding to build a safe tower right next to the pillar. Once you’re level with the cage, switch to your Pickaxe and break through the iron bars. Now you can destroy the crystal itself, either by hitting it or shooting it.
⚠️ Watch out: Every Crystal Explosion deals massive damage. The moment you break the final bar or land the final shot, immediately back up or place a block between you and the blast. A misstep here can knock you off the pillar entirely.
Surviving the Climb
Pillaring up is the most dangerous part of Phase 1. The dragon will try to knock you off, and Endermen might aggro if you look at them. Here’s the safest routine:
- Build your tower quickly, keeping an ear out for the dragon’s charge.
- Break the cage, destroy the crystal, and immediately start descending your tower.
- If you get knocked off, your Water Bucket or a pre-drunk Potion of Slow Falling is your lifeline. Tossing an Ender Pearl at the island below can also save you from the void.
Trust me, methodically clearing each pillar might feel slow, but it’s the only way. Once the last crystal is gone, that healing white beam vanishes for good, and the real fight begins.
With all ten End Crystals destroyed, you’ve severed the dragon’s lifeline. She can’t heal anymore. Take a breath, regroup on solid ground, and get ready for Phase 2—she’s all yours.
Ender Dragon Phase 2: Combat and Perching Patterns
The crystals are gone—now it's just you and the dragon. This is the moment you've been preparing for. In Minecraft, the Ender Dragon is no longer an invincible healer, but a formidable aerial boss with a deadly pattern. Understanding its two distinct phases—Flying Phase and Perching Phase—is the key to landing the final blow.

The Aerial Assault: Flying Phase
When airborne, the Ender Dragon will circle the central island, occasionally diving in for devastating charge attacks. This is the Flying Phase. Your primary weapon here is your bow. Aim for the dragon's head when you can, as it takes more damage. The trick is to lead your shots, firing just ahead of its flight path as it moves toward or away from you. Be ready to dodge constantly; strafing sideways is the best way to avoid its swooping body slam, which deals heavy damage and knockback.
The audio cue is your best friend. Listen for the distinct whoosh of the dragon's wings as it begins a charge, giving you a split second to sidestep.
During this phase, the dragon also uses two ranged attacks. It will breathe Dragon's Breath, creating a lingering purple cloud on the ground that deals magic damage over time. Never stand in it. It will also launch Fireball projectiles; these are slow-moving and easy to sidestep, but they explode on impact, so keep moving.
The Damage Window: Perching Phase
After a few circuits, the dragon will descend and land on the Central Bedrock Fountain. This is the Perching Phase, and it's your main opportunity to deal massive damage. While perched, the dragon becomes immune to arrows, so switch immediately to your sword.
This is when you execute the Melee Rush strategy. Sprint to the fountain and target the dragon's head for double damage. Attack relentlessly, but stay aware: the dragon will still breathe Dragon's Breath around the fountain. Position yourself slightly to the side of its head rather than directly in front to avoid the toxic pools.
Advanced Tactic: Bed Bombing
For players looking to end the fight quickly, Bed Bombing is a powerful, if risky, technique. When the dragon is on the Central Bedrock Fountain, place a bed on the bedrock rim. Immediately place a solid block (like cobblestone) between you and the bed as a shield, then right-click the bed to use it. Beds explode violently in the End, dealing massive damage to the dragon. With precise timing, you can chain a few of these explosions during a single perch.
⚠️ Watch out: The bed explosion will hurt you too if you're not shielded. Always place that safety block and have plenty of food or healing potions ready.
The fight will cycle between these two phases. Stay mobile, heal when needed, and pour on the damage during every perch. With the crystals gone and its patterns known, the Ender Dragon's reign is about to end.
How to Collect the Dragon Egg and Rewards in Minecraft
The dragon is down, the sky is clear—and now it's time for the payoff. In Minecraft, the moment the Ender Dragon explodes into a shower of light is pure victory, but don't rush to the exit portal just yet. Your hard-earned rewards are waiting to be claimed, and one of them requires a special trick to collect.

Claiming Your Victory Loot
As the dragon dissolves, a massive burst of Experience Orbs rains down around the central fountain. This first kill grants a whopping 12,000 XP, enough to shoot a player from level zero all the way to Level 68. Trust me, this is the perfect time to enchant all that gear you’ve been saving up. The Exit Portal, the bedrock structure at the center of the island, will now activate with a swirling vortex, ready to take you home after you’ve finished up.
But first, look to the top of that portal. The Dragon Egg, a unique black-and-purple trophy, spawns right there. If you try to mine it directly, it will just teleport away. Here’s the reliable method: let it teleport once to a nearby spot (like onto some End Stone). Then, dig two blocks down directly beneath it, place a Torch in that hole, and finally break the block the egg is resting on. It will drop onto the torch and pop into your inventory as a collectible item.
While you’re waiting for the egg to teleport, use this moment to collect Dragon’s Breath. Right-click the lingering purple clouds on the ground with an Empty Glass Bottle. This rare brewing ingredient is essential for making Lingering Potions later.
With the egg secured and your bottles filled, you’re ready to conclude this chapter. Jumping into the Exit Portal will trigger the game's credits and return you to your Overworld spawn point, triumphant. You’ve not only beaten Minecraft’s iconic boss but also gathered every unique reward from the fight—now the real endgame exploration can begin.
Ender Dragon Post-Game: End Cities and Respawning
The credits have rolled, but your adventure in Minecraft is far from over. The true endgame—and some of the best loot in the entire game—begins now, right where you stand victorious.

Diverse biomes in Minecraft.
Unlocking the Outer End Islands
After the dragon's defeat, a new, smaller portal called an End Gateway appears on the island's edge. It’s a one-block-wide, starry void. Don’t just walk up to it—you need to throw an Ender Pearl through it to activate the teleport. This is your ticket to the vast outer islands, a sprawling archipelago of End Stone where the most valuable treasures await.
Your primary goal out here is finding an End City. These towering, alien structures are filled with loot, but the ultimate prize is found on the deck of an End Ship, a floating vessel docked nearby. Inside its treasure room, you’ll find the Elytra—a pair of wings that, when equipped in your chestplate slot, allow you to glide. Combine them with Firework Rockets in your off-hand for a massive speed boost, and you’ve unlocked true, sustained flight. It’s a complete game-changer for exploration.
Before you go Elytra-hunting, pack extra Ender Pearls and building blocks. The outer islands are a maze of floating chunks and massive gaps. A misplaced glide can send you into the void without a pearl to save yourself.
The Dragon Rematch
Maybe you want more Dragon's Breath for potions, or perhaps you just crave another epic fight. Good news: the Ender Dragon can be respawned. Head back to the central Exit Portal where you claimed your egg. To trigger a rematch, you must place [4 End Crystals] on the four sides of the bedrock frame surrounding the portal.
You’ll need to craft these crystals yourself. The recipe, made at a Crafting Table, requires [7 Glass] + [1 Eye of Ender] + [1 Ghast Tear]. That last ingredient means a trip back to the Nether to hunt Ghasts. Once you have your four crystals, simply place one on each side of the portal frame. Beams of light will shoot up, reconstructing the obsidian pillars and crystals, and the dragon will burst from the portal for round two. Remember, subsequent kills only yield 500 XP and no extra egg, but they do create additional End Gateways, making it easier to explore more outer islands.
With the Elytra granting you freedom of the skies and the knowledge to challenge the dragon anytime, you've truly mastered the End. Your world is now wide open—go claim it.
